Have you rendered the sequence prior to viewing playback?

Your source .mov files are compressed with the Animation codec. If you are working in a sequence that uses DV compression, the chroma resolution of your source clips is being reduced to 1/4 the original resolution – 4:1:1 YUV as opposed to 4:4:4 RGB. Red is particularly nasty with regard to showing the color stepping artifacts in DV. It’s also the reason why the DV format is a horrible choice for shooting green screen footage.

Try selecting “mirror displays” in the Display menu. The client monitor and your local monitor will need to be running at the same resolution. What type of client monitor are you using? Hopefully, it’s HD-capable.

A small point: your system is a Mac Pro (Intel), not a G5 (PowerPC). G5s are no longer made.

If you upgrade, don’t get the nVidia. Get the ATI Radeon HD 3870. Its performance is superior to the nVidia card in Core Image applications like Motion. The nVidia is a better gaming card, but not as good as the 3870 for the Pro Apps.

As for RAM upgrades, there is no advantage to buying Apple RAM. Buy from Crucial or Ramjet and save a bundle.

Interesting theory, but I have never run into this problem with 24p SD projects using 23.98 as the output frame rate from Combustion, nor do I have the problem in non-DVCPRO HD high def sequences.

If you need to do anything more complicated than simply pasting yourself over existing video (i.e. if you want objects to pass in front of you), you’ll need a good compositing application for rotoscoping.
Final Cut Studio 2 includes Motion, which does have roto tools, but it’s not up to the level of something like Combustion or After Effects.
