Okay, so pI3 can read your footage, but pIRender can’t it seems. Sounds like a bug in pIRender, but can’t be sure.

The 4:3 issue is probably because the footage uses non-square pixels, and particleIllusion only uses square pixels at this time.

Your best bet will be to convert the footage (using another app) to another format that uses square pixels and a different codec that pI supports. Then use that footage in pI. If the quality after converting it is bad, render just the particles with alpha in pI, then composite onto your original footage in your video editing app.

Does particleIllusion (not pIRender) load your original footage correctly and play it? Try zooming out the stage to 50% or 25% or whatever you need, then render in pI3. When it asks you if you want to set the zoom level to 100%, click “no”. The idea is to render a lower-res version inside pI (avoiding pIRender).

Create a project that has no background footage and one or two emitters. Render it as a QuickTime movie. Then use that movie as a background movie in a new project and see if pIRender still has a problem with it. If not, something about that other Quicktime movie must be the problem.

It’s probably the background movie. Try saving the project, then running pIRender manually and loading it there.

On the new system, are you trying a simple project with just one emitter and no background footage? Are you certain that the pIllusionRender settings are exactly the same as on the old system?

  • How do you know that system RAM is the problem? If you zoom out the stage so everything is very small and you get the same framerate, then you’re probably CPU-limited (too many particles). If however you get higher framerates when everything is tiny, you’re probably being limited by your graphics card hardware.

That being said, we understand the need for a 64-bit version of pI, and are working toward that. I can’t give a timeframe for it, but it’s in the plans.

Use a deflector object if you’re using the standalone pI3. If you’re using the plug-in version of particleIllusion, there’s no easy way to do it.

    Rob,

Not everybody uses pI for realistic effects, hence the variety of emitters.

Better movie file support is in the plans, but it will be quite a large undertaking so won’t be coming anytime soon.

  • 1) Install pI3
    2) click “activate online” button that shows in activation window
    3) enter serial number to login to website, then follow instructions to generate activation code
    4) activate pI3 with this activation code

Is that what you mean? If you didn’t follow those steps, you did something wrong.

    5) Program hangs and is hard to use

Probably an OpenGL issue. Make sure you have the latest video drivers for your card. (Get them directly from NVIDIA or AMD/ATI sites, whichever is appropriate)

November 17, 2011 at 4:11 pm in reply to: November library delay — test?

Thanks to those who assisted or offered to assist. I’ve figured out the problem, and it’s a bug in pI3, not an issue with the library.

I’m not sure of the exact conditions, but if you have a non-zero “preload frames” value for an emitter and that emitter uses “attached to emitter” for some of the particle types, adding an emitter to the stage will crash under some conditions.

I’ve released the November library with “attached to emitter” turned off for all of those emitters. Shouldn’t be needed, but there is a note in the zip file on how to turn them back on if needed.
