    Some tips:

Use as few deflector segments as possible, as some particles will “leak” through the deflector joints.

Try using 2 deflectors instead of a single deflector with 2 parts.

Make sure that the deflector “hits” slider is set to the far right.

Note that you should not use particle shapes that large unless the particles themselves will be that large. If the particles will be 100 x 100 pixels on the screen, then using a 512 x 512 shape image is both a waste of memory, and will result in lower-than-expected image quality.

Maybe. Check Elvis’ popular tutorial on disintegrating things by clicking on his image at the top of this forum.

Make sure the images are named filename_xxxx.tga (or whatever the correct extension is for the image format you want to use) where xxxx is the sequence number (0000, 0001, etc.)

Then when you select one of the images, it will ask if you want to use the sequence.

If you’ve done all this, then make sure that the frame speed slider is not set to “off”.

Use “reset default settings” in the Start – Programs – particleIllusion 3 menu. If that doesn’t fix the problem, your default emitter library may be corrupted, so rename default.il3 to something else, then when pIllusion starts select a different emitter library.

Also try the “creatures” emitter library (2 there), or if you don’t have the CD version, Alan_01_04 (for one of them — I can’t find the other).

  • I don’t think the “insects crawling up the body” part would be simple in pIllusion, although it might be possible depending on the details of the shot. Having the bugs already covering the body is possible, but it will still require a lot of work, and some masking work in your compositing app.

Although if you want it to look like the bugs are crawling around the person (crawls from their front, around their sides, to the other side) it won’t look right in pIllusion — you’ll want to use a 3D app for that.

Even if you do use pIllusion, you’ll need an animated image sequence of a bug crawling.

Yes. You’re limited to rendering slightly smaller than your desktop resolution in particleIllusion SE and 3.0, but 3.0 comes with pIllusionRender, the standalone renderer that can handle larger resolutions.

(although it’s been pointed out that some Mac systems have a problem rendering larger than 2048 with pIRender)

That’s a library that Elvis created and it’s on his website.
