The docs explain this in more detail, but basically when using “create non-intense alpha”, intense particles do not contribute to the alpha channel.
For me, the only time to use “create non-intense alpha” (CNIA) is when you’re doing smoke, or any other effect that has a “soft” edge. Otherwise, just use the “remove black bg…” option and make sure your compositing app interprets it as a straight alpha, not premultiplied.

Unless he checked “create non-intense alpha” and only had intense particles there — they wouldn’t be part of the alpha channel, and “nothing” would show. Maybe that explains it.

You didn’t do a reinstall — the dlls needed for image support do not exist. Do a reinstall.

We’ll have a new reel at some point, but not in the next few months (no date set for it yet). We typically put one together for Siggraph (in Aug) but we’re not exhibiting there this year.
Keep your clips around, and when we’re ready to start putting a new reel together we’ll post about it, asking for your clips.

Just to be clear, those error messages after pIllusion crashes are provided by Windows, not by pIllusion. So the strangeness of the error messages are not the subject here (they show for any Windows program that crashes), but the crashing when trying to save an AVI is.
Also, you’re crashing after you specify the output filename (“test.avi” for instance) and after the output options dialog shows, right? (That’s the point that AVI options dialog should be shown. pIllusion is polling all of the codecs, determining which can work with the current settings so it can build the codec list that is shown.)
Do nothing except save the AVI: open particleIllusion SE, then click the “save output” button and try saving the AVI. Don’t do anything else (don’t add an emitter, don’t load bg images, etc.)
I also assume that your stage size is set to 320×240. If it’s not, do that before clicking the Save Output button.

If particleIllusion doesn’t give you the “image appears to be part of a sequence” dialog box, then it doesn’t know it’s a sequence. I suspect it’s because it’s named “name.xxxx.tif” instead of “namexxxx.tif”.

Both Windows 3.0.1a and Mac 3.0.5 (both latest versions) work the same way.
Make the emitter an area, then open the properties dialog and check Mask Emitter and click the Options button. At this point, no options show except the Invert Alpha and select image(s) button. Click the select images button, select a single image. If it detects that it’s part of an image sequence and asks you if you want to use the sequence, click “no”. You will not see the other options.
If instead you select an image that is part of a sequence, then answer “yes” to the “use the sequnce” question, you’ll get the options on both Mac and Windows. If it does not ask you if you want to use the sequence, then the images are not named correctly for it to detect that they are part of a sequence.

I just checked this again more carefully, and it appears to be working as expected in 3.0.5. You have to choose an image sequence though, not a single image.
Are you not getting the other options (random, hold frame, etc.) when you select an image sequence?
