    The Preferences file is:

    Your User Account / Library / Preferences / pIllusion3.prefs

Delete that and try running again.

PNG is a lossless format if you save a 24-bit or higher PNG. TGA is lossless too. Which means that the contents will be exactly, pixel-for-pixel the same as uncompressed AVI.

Just export to a PNG sequence with alpha and be done with it.

When you run pIR this way (project file empty, output empty), what is showing in the “Current Movie Settings” section (top line only — AVI. Second line is for WMV). Please let me know what it says so I can try to install it here and duplicate the problem.

Whatever it is, is it a codec that you normally use? Do you have other apps that you use to save AVIs? If so, select that codec in other apps and see what happens.

If it’s not a codec that you normally use, I’d suggest removing it. If you installed it as part of a “codec pack” you may be able to uninstall it. If not you can use a tool like Codec Sniper to remove it.

There are so many codecs it’s not possible for us to test all of them (of course). None of the beta testers had any of the problems you’re having though (wish they did).

Also, the “render” button should not be enabled until both the project file and output fields are filled in. I have noticed that under some conditions this is not the case, but I recommend not pressing “render” until both project and output are filled in.

Try increasing the “number” of particles. Usually have to do this for emitters that move “too fast”.

I tested it — it doesn’t crash me, but it doesn’t display anything either. This is an old problem that we’ve never been able to figure out: some uncompressed AVIs don’t load in particleIllusion. Sometimes it’s on a per-machine basis.

Do you have any other codecs installed that support alpha channel? If not, I suggest Huffy UV or Lagarith. After installing one (or both), choose that in Ultra and see if it lets you save a 32-bit AVI.

That will load fine in pIllusion (and will save disk space too).

October 15, 2007 at 12:00 pm in reply to: 3.02 Run slowly with some projects

Run 3.0.1a, open the project settings, and tell me if “high-quality” motion blur is enabled. R-click in the preview window and check the same thing.

Then run 3.0.2 and do the same thing.

    Let me know the results.

Whatever the results you get, I’m still going to suggest that you download the latest drivers for your card directly from your card manufacturer’s website, or better yet, directly from NVidia or ATIs website. If you do have the latest, and they’re beta drivers, then I suggest going back to the latest “qualified” or non-beta drivers.

I’m not clear if you’ve run pIRender alone, or if you’ve been launching it from pI. If you haven’t tried launching pIR alone, do that, select AVI output, but don’t press the ‘AVI Options’ button — just use whatever AVI setting it shows already.

If that works, then run pIR again, and this time press the AVI Options button.

Also, make sure you’re loading a “nice” project — use 640 x 480 as the stage size (because this is supported by most codecs). It doesn’t matter what emitters are in the project — in fact it doesn’t even need emitters, although without emitters it’s hard to see if you loaded the right project in pIR when it’s rendering.

Load the “Default.iel” emitter library. That’s where they are.

The May 2000 contest (water) had a couple of moon emitters in it.
