I am sad to say I think I doscovered what I did wrong, and I pray that you or someone has a solution for this wreckless user named Alan.
To fit the content shot at one event onto one single layer DVD, I entered the SDHC card folder structure and manually deleted a clip or two, assuming it would just bring down the folder size but not mess with the other contents of the folder (other clips). Turns out when I do this (I just tested), the card and folder are no longer recognized as valid, probably because the card’s “map” or info files do not match the contents, in other words, it thinks it should have the deleted file but doesn’t find it and thus just doesn’t work.
Any way I can “reset” the content files, the folder’s “map” so it can re-build based on what is now on the card/folder? Have I lost my files forever? Is there some Mac or PC software that read MTS files straight, without needing the FCP interface? So many questions and one looming premonition that I have sealed the fate of that footage…

I am using FCP 6.0.6 on a MAcBook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8

This happens when I “add folder”, since I cannot find an :add volume” option. It also happens when I try “add custom path”. In both cases, I am choosing the folder which came form the SD card, which contains there folders: PRIVATE, MISC, DCM (the last being for digital photos).

The message I get is:
WARNING
“untitled” contains unsupported media or has an invalid director structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matchs supported media.

?

This is great news. A second question, regarding your sugestion: how do I Log and Transfer the footage onto the computer, coming in as DVCProHD?
Where would I configure this? It seems like once in the log and transfer window, the only two options are Apple Pro Res and Apple Intermediate Codec. Would I configure this is the good ‘ol Audio & Video settings?

Let me probe a little closer to the crude alteranatives:
Could the person watch in Premiere (in a log window similar to Final’s L&T), write down the timecode of each selected clip and then give me that list for me to manually L&T in FCP? In other words, just simply will the TC match? I can’t see why not…

I trust you have the correct opinion on this, so I’ll just throw in my last towell:

I managed to install the driver and capture program (within FCP) on the MAc here, running FCP 5.1.4
The capture window opens, no problem, and I can even see the timecode for each clip. BUT there is no image or sound: this is obviously my problem, right? This is why I can’t use FCP 5.1.4, I assume. I just thought maybe I got lucky with some sort of exception and managed to install the codec/driver/capture program.

Do I have any chance or should I be realistic?

Shane, I am reading the User MAnual PDF that comes with the card reader (or camera?) and it claims that the driver / codec to import XDCAM EX files works ONLY with FCP 6.01 and above… Is this solid or is there a workaround? I am editing at a facility with only FCP 5.1.4, although the operating system and the quicktime version are up to date.

Great… SOunds almost too good to be true, but I’ll give it a shot.
So: I need to master to DVCam NTSC, so I should just plug the HD master into a DV 24p timeline and Print to Video?

I am achieving the pulldown no problem, but it looks jerky when things move horizontally in a linear manner/speed. I have noticed that consumer DVDs (movies, etc) are encoded with a more complex pulldown that includes a interlacing of those repeated frames, which seems to make things smoother… Any info on how to do this sort of pulldown with those repeated frames interlacing?
