    I am editing in FCP 6.02, with footage shot using a HVX500 at slow-motion 60fps (23.97 is the frame rate of the footage importred into FCP). Frame size is 960×720.

    Now I need to output to regular DV NTSC, for DVD and DVCam, since the material will go to standard resolution TV (NTSC). So, I exported a native QT Movie from my sequence, preserving all the native settings, so I have a self-contained master. Then I imported this into FCP and placed it into a DV NTSC 4:3 sequence, interlaced, 29.97 fps… regular DV NTSC. Rendered and burned a DVD using Toast 9, which did the conversion to m2v & AC3.

    The resulting DVD shows the inevitable stuttering that comes from the pulldown (24fps becoming 30 fps via duplication of 6 of the 24 frames). I know this is a necessary mathematical comensation, BUT, what is the best way to minimize this artifact? Is tyhere some other route I should be attempting?

    For DVD, you can simply make a 23.98 progressive DVD. All necessary 3:2 pulldown will be handled by the DVD player (all DVD players).

    As far as a DV master, you can simply nest your timeline into a 23.98 dv timeline and FCP will add the proper 3:2 pulldown upon play out.

    Great… SOunds almost too good to be true, but I’ll give it a shot.
    So: I need to master to DVCam NTSC, so I should just plug the HD master into a DV 24p timeline and Print to Video?

    I am achieving the pulldown no problem, but it looks jerky when things move horizontally in a linear manner/speed. I have noticed that consumer DVDs (movies, etc) are encoded with a more complex pulldown that includes a interlacing of those repeated frames, which seems to make things smoother… Any info on how to do this sort of pulldown with those repeated frames interlacing?

    Yep.

    Ah, but there is a problem. If you put a 23.98 movie in a 29.97 Sd timeline within FCP, proper 3:2 pulldown is not introduced. FCP performs a 2:2:2:4 pulldown. That’s why its imperative to put the footage in a 23.98 dv timeline as FCP will play out the proper 3:2 pulldown.
