The Ki Pro is designed to dissipate heat from the ribbed Storage Module; by placing items on top of the Storage Module, as shown in your image, you are compromising the ability to dissipate heat. Stacking items on top of the unit is not recommended. If you question the operation of a product or are uncertain about its operational parameters, please consider contacting AJA Technical Support. The PortaBrace bag designed for the Ki Pro must have it’s ventilation flaps opened to avoid the chance of heat related issues. It is possible that the flaps on the bag were not opened as needed leading to the overheating. In general, Ki Pros are not impacted by overheating, but in the event that an over temperature is encountered, the Ki Pro will power down to avoid damage.

Typically when users see the “Backup and Reformat” prompt, as you are seeing, it means that the cards are being removed prematurely from the unit. While it sounds like you are following the correct procedure by using the SLOT button to unmount the media, perhaps you aren’t waiting a sufficient amount of time for the LED indicators to go from lit to unlit on the unit. Only when this occurs is it safe to remove the media. You can also tell if it is safe to remove the media from looking at the display UI as the Reel and Slot information in the UI will both display as “N/A” when the media has truly been unmounted.
Regarding this statement, “The odd thing that I noticed yesterday, when I inserted the corrupted cards back into the KPM after doing nothing more than copying the files from the card to a hard drive, They mounted just fine.”
Because the Ki Pro Mini formats media as HFS+, by nature, directory errors, caused by premature removal of the media from the Ki Pro Mini, are often resolved by simply mounting the HFS+ volumes under Mac OS X. When the OS tries to mount the volume, it will often resolve small directory errors meaning that when the media is re-inserted into the Ki Pro Mini, the cause of the “Backup and Reformat” prompt has been cleared.

The AJA Ki Pro only hosts the storage that is inserted into it; it cannot host external storage. Hosting external storage would not allow AJA to properly qualify the attached storage; if a user could attach any FireWire drive to the unit, there isn’t any guarantee that the media would have sufficient bandwidth to record Apple ProRes 422 QuickTime files without issue.

AJA currently supports the start/stop command found in ancillary SDI data for the RED One, the RED Epic and the Canon XF series SDI enabled cameras. AJA plans on providing support for more cameras in future firmware updates. However, not all camera manufacturers provide this information, so not all cameras can be supported nor do all cameras provide such start/stop ancillary data. Please be aware that implementing this type of support is a custom implementation for each camera manufacturer (or camera) as the start/stop commands are not a SMPTE specification and are unique to each camera manufacturer.

The upcoming Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini 3.0 firmware will provide a new user selectable feature in the CONFIG menu parameters called Loss of Video. This feature will allow users to select from the current behavior where the recorder stops recordings due to a detected loss of video or the user may elect to continue the recording during the loss of video signal. During the loss of video, the recorder records color bars with a text super of “LOSS OF VIDEO” so that users have a continued recording, but are aware that a signal issue has occurred. If the signal returns, the color bars and “LOSS OF VIDEO” text will disappear and the valid signal will be recorded.
This feature, and others, were demonstrated at the recent IBC 2011 tradeshow. The Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini 3.0 firmware update is slated for release during the month of October.

If the output of the camera is 1080PsF 23.98 via HD-SDI, then you cannot monitor HDMI in the same format as HDMI does not support PsF signals, only true progressive. This would be true for either the Sony PMW-F3 or the Ki Pro Mini.
A better solution would be to use HD-SDI output on the camera and use HD-SDI output on the Ki Pro Mini for monitoring; then what you are monitoring and recording is the full signal path at 1080PsF 2.398. If you must use HDMI monitoring for some reason, such as a connection to an electronic viewfinder, then you would want to be sure that you are using firmware version 1.1 on the Sony PMW-F3.
