I posted on my new wee laptop a week or two ago, from a pc perspective, mac fan & all as I am. I got a dell 6000 15.4 widescreen, for the price (1174 euro) the spec was murderous: 1600 x 1050, 60 gig 5400 drive, 64MB radeon (or i think its radeon), 1.6 pentium.m (which is weirdly fast). Bottom line being, in a comparative AE test with a dual 1ghz quicksilver at work, the dell lappie was nearly Two And A Half times faster rendering the promo. Which would have pretty serious implications for the powerbook, whose architecture is roughly of the same vintage as the g4 workstation. The dell’s a bit heavy, there’s no osx, but xp’s pretty alright, (window management & responsiveness gets a bit irritating). Depends, I suppose, on how much horsepower you need, versus the overall experience? Not too mention price. That dell significanty outperforms for roughly half the price..

methinks that horizontal thingie is a custom knoll lens flare. They’re animating the text scale attributes too. I really like the wee smoke puff at the end of that first one..
Nice work, given that they’re effectively taking the pish out of it. -
if you turn off m.blur & set the render output to interlaced, you’ll get very smooth movement.. (maybe too smooth? Tends to look like a dve move, in a way..)

No bother. To be honest, I’d have to admit to a wee bit of trepidation with this thing. & lordie but i do miss the finder..

I really love my mac but; I just bought an 1174 euro dell 6000, (I think ye get cheaper again with the US rebate codes) for which I got 3/4 gig of ram, centrino 1.5, 60 gig 5400 drive, 1600 x 1050 15.4″ display and for kicks they threw in a free printer.Just this evening completed a comparative test with the dual 1 ghz quicksilver at work, real world project, 3d lighting & transform, tons of effects & what have you.. This dell lappie was nearly TWO and one HALF times faster than my work mac. I literally nearly swallowed my cigarette. Downsides: No OSX. Which i badly miss. heavy (7pounder), screen while not bad at all, is not methinks in the same league as a pb. (no xblack stuff on it) Still tho. Based on that, for roughly half the spec price this thing must surely be kicking the 15″ p.book a long, long way into touch. Roll on pentiums?:)

doggie head tilts? A significant hunny bun? If performing the former would only grant me the latter…:) nice one with the 1-2 jobbie, should’ve thought o’ that. Now all I need is the corresponding 75% magnification..

Graaagh! That’s another one I’ve waited five years to find out.. All those years spent trudging despondently off to the general preferences. That’s up there with alt-home key. I nearly wept when brian maffit nonchalantly popped that one out on the total ae dvd. No, really, I got a bit emotional…

Mmmm, maybe a smidge of hyperbole going on… Thats a nice point there, one mac box rebooting into native windows for Max (always made me hesitate to fork out for a mac of my own Max did), with a firewire drive hanging off for shared storage (they won’t be able to see each other’s stuff to the same drive will they?) Thats actually the bit tempting..
God, what do apple do to designers? I’m supposed to be louche and distanced, not some freaked out mac fan. Sigh.A

June 6, 2005 at 7:27 pm in reply to: News: Apple to Use Intel Microprocessors Beginning in 2006No really, this is not good. Isn’t this a core strategic error? God, he could at least have gone with the opteron. It apparently trounces xeon in graphics heavy arenas. The nasty sound is the reality distortion field around cupertino cracking. This strips away one of the core elements of the macintosh’s alternative ethos. Bugger it. I knew this era was too good to last. I think jobs has fundamentally misjudged the delicate psychology of apple’s position in the buying public’s (my) mind. The one thing you cannot say about this decision is that it represents the much espused virtue of thinking different. Rather, it strikes you strongly of capitulation to the seeming banal realities of apple’s position. Whatever figleaf remained is now gone; the mac is now an enclosure, good fabrication and a well regarded unix variant os. Demmit, Jobs, what were you thinking of?
(I actually feel like stamping my foot repeatedly.
I think my inner child is having a s**t fit) -

And they appear to have a functioning plasma reactor in the top left corner of the site too. I bet they’re growing dinasours.
