I’ve got a new 1600 x 1050 15.4″ lcd display to play with (on the surprisingly affordable inspiron 6000), & I was wondering about the AE preview. I’m used to virtually always working at 50% view at half res (on a 1280 x 1024 19″ crt display) & occasionally bumping up to full res to check things. This always made sense to me, in terms of system speed, & plus i liked prepping elements at that size, or at that distance, as it were. Its a bit different on a newer high resolution display though. Half res is minute! I know there’s a bit of forehead slapping obviousness to this statement. Its just i’d never really considered it before. Checking sizes with photoshop, I figured that anything between 60-70% would be ok.. Does it kaibosh AE to introduce more magnification increments? I’m thinking the anti-aliasing (based around half res) would be rougher at some magnifications, -ala photoshop- but I’m not sure that it wouldn’t be nice to have that choice..

After fooling around with the Custom Resolution, you can get 75% resolution, well, sort of, if you’re the “glass is half full” kind of person. You can change either horizontal or vertical to “Render every 2 pixel(s) horizontally (or vertically). Double click the Custom on the Comp Window to get the dialogue box. If you change both from 1 to 2, you get 50% resolution. But if you change either horz or vert (not both) to 2, and leave the other at 1, you get 75% resolution.

Your choice, horizontal or vertical for 75%. If you find you are cocking you head to one side or the other (you know that cute thing doggies do when concentrating on something new and weird) to compensate for the half vert/horz 75% shift, it’s probably good to have a co-worker (or girlfriend or wife/significant-other/hunny bun) to watch you from across the room to see which is cuter, the
2 pixel vert head tilt, or the 2 pixel horz head tilt.

Resolution is relative, Image is everything.

doggie head tilts? A significant hunny bun? If performing the former would only grant me the latter…:) nice one with the 1-2 jobbie, should’ve thought o’ that. Now all I need is the corresponding 75% magnification..

Ah, everthing is possible, if you have the head-tilt right.

    Window>Workspace>Two Comp Views

gives you two windows. Change one to 50%, leave the other at 100%, tilt you head correctly, defocus = 75% magnification. I love math.

PS, try the doogies head tilt thing around Americans and Brits (works best on females of the species), they will think it cute. Beware South-east asian beauties, they may konk you on the head, wrap you in banana leaves and throw you on a fire.
