  • Fractal noise mask to make a dissolve effect?

Posted by Nathan on June 4, 2005 at 7:10 pm

I want to get a nice dissolve effect like the effect that can be seen here.

https://www.kigot.com/ ( on the main menu mouseover “About” and you will see a dropdown. Now mouseout and you will see the menu “dissolve” away. thats what I am trying to do)

It seems a fractal mask is the wise choice but I could be wrong. Anyone have an idea how to do this?

Actually in this website the menu does a hard dissapear, but after that you see a bit of animated lightning-type stuff.

You could try doing it with fractal noise, but Caustics could be a good bet, too.

Thanks for the info (at least I know I am barking up the right tree). I am trying to use fractal noise as an adjustment layer and that is not working. I am not sure how to go about using fractal noise or caustics as a mask to reveal or remove in this case the image. Thinkyou could provide a little insight?

    Ahh…

To use one layer’s luminance for another layer’s transparency, you can use it as a trackmatte.

Create your fractal noise on a separate layer, and place this noise layer on top of the layer you want to dissolve.

Assign the fractal layer as a Luma Track matte for the layer below in the timeline window. (look up track matte in the Help for details).

You can animate the brightness and contrast in you fractal noise layer to go from black to white over time, which creates the transition with the fractal noise in between.

    Hope this makes sense.

Alternately, you could apply Fractal Noise in a separate comp, then use that comp as the gradient layer when you apply Gradient Wipe to the layer that you want to dissolve.

wow thanks and cheers to the both of you. Bot methods seem to work real well. The gradient wipe is waay cool too. Thanks guys.

One last question. ANy idea how to give it that kinda glow when the effect is happening? With either method?

    Many thanks for your help

Yes! And set the Glow’s Threshold parameter so that the glow happens only on the lighter areas – would be nice to glow only on the darker areas but that’s another issue.

besides the point, but: are kigot preparing to take over the globe or what? That music is insaaane. And they appear to have a functioning plasma reactor in the top left corner of the site too. I bet they’re growing dinasours.

slightly OT….this is a coool website. in fact, i think I can remember exactly the same question being asked a couple of months ago. Anyways…

If any of you guys are into web design as well, would all these animations have been rendered out as little video clips and then just put into Flash? This is what I want to do with my website, but am worried about loading times etc…any advice for putting AE created material into a website?
