I had an issue applying filters to stuff at the multicam stage too – maybe wait until you’re happy with the edit and then just collapse the multiclips?
or rather dupe the sequence and collapse the multiclips there..

  • not hidden as such – more simply that you can request numbered tracks – thats not too crazy – apple have officially unofficially confirmed that XML OMF export has been maintained – in order for that to be so – you need numbered tracks. there have been a few “it was confirmed to me after the meet” blog quotes at this point –

I’m comfortable saying the following based on a neurotically exhaustive reading of every single blog and forum post associated with the FCPX launch:
you can invoke a clip viewer, and you can export XML, EDL and OMF. The UI itself is the UI, I don’t think that’s going to change – I’m kind of OK with it myself

  • strong rumour that that functionality can be activated – its highly likely that FCPX is presented in its default state in its simplest, most easily grasped presentation, I wouldn’t call that dumbing down per se – more like photoshop opening up without every single palette on display.

they flat out haven’t killed OMF – half of soho would send trained ninjas to one infinite loop like the cartel at the end of scarface

I will bet you my hopefully future mortgage – we still have OMF.

yes – not that we would want to get anyone under NDA into trouble –

I have an answer for how obtuse Apple have been, I think – not that its one I like –

if this thing catches on – if apple can entice a new wider userbase to the professional toolset (or at least to FCX in its simplest default configuration) then they will be doing two things they like – one: spreading the digital humanities, and two: make an absolute bucket of money – potentially over 2 billion pure profit the first year alone.

In order for them to try and break the broad public skein, to capture broad attention, they had to make that presentation full to brim of whizzbang, and also really really not boring – they had to present it as software that is fun sexy, self explanatory and easy to grasp. In other words – there was no way in hell apple we’re going to talk about 16 bit filters, or edl options, or how compound clips effect the XML file.

I’ve come to the conclusion that most of the things we’re worried about were deemed boring in terms of that demonstration, so apple stepped carefully around them much as one might a turd – they had serious promotional market making stuff on their minds. I think we’ve got the stuff we’re worried about, which isn’t really all that much (XML, EDL, source viewer, ability to turn stuff off) its just that apple were happy to leave us twisting in the wind in order to have the entire conversation be about the things they wanted people to talk about – which it arguably isn’t as we’re all freaking out so loudly…

aren’t there at least two unofficial official leaks into the wild here? a participant on the kenstone forum, who ken stone knows, said with pretty flat out authority that the traditional setup with viewer and numbered tracks can be invoked – and its been said half officially elsewhere that edl xml is supported – presumably it requires you to turn on track numbering or something.

I’m spitballing but I would say that, just from a PR perspective even, apple couldn’t drop the entire broadcast end of their pro apps line up in the crap – it would be too crazy, even for them.

  • last one for me! just thought this might be of general interest, if the guess is accurate.

  • yeah – the thing I was thinking was that they have to give a snap controller as currently understood for frame accurate stamping – and then they have to give us the ability to invoke a fully magnetised timeline, which is snap on steroids really.. if the one on the right is snap, which I think is likely, the one on the left might be the on off for the collision detection part of the magnetised timeline…

I have begun to warm to this FCP X, he said quietly, I’m getting very curious as to what it will look and perform like in dual monitor configuration. I think there would be a lot of exposed functionality in that configuration. I might even feel like I was sitting on a smoke.

  • Jesus Christ. Eighty pages? Thats an ars technica review. Still – he really knows his onions. I’ll be very curious to see how fond I get of the precision editor – I never used to use trim mode too much. Also we pretty much know what the music photo and type buttons are going to do as well based on that.

Although I have to say that I’m dissapointed that they’re encouraging people to source project music from the itunes directory – that’s just ruddy sloppy carry on. I know we’re out of scratch disks in a way, but that’s just bad project manangement to suggest linking to aac files in iTunes. Unless we’re going to bundled soundtrack assets? Probably not really. Not over wifi from the AppStore.
