that alarm bell should go off for you too if you are working on a project fee basis.

Let’s not call it all talent – some of it is a skill set that can be developed, some of it is a mindset that you need to have, while some of it is talent. I find that people that create a lof of their own art in illustrator with the pen tool, make a smooth transition once they understand animation concepts. Especially if they have experience as a traditional hand artsist and are comfortable working with a wacom pad.

There’s no hard a nd fast rule but this is what you need to be or get good at rotoscoping

    A great roto-artist has:
    – Attention to detail
    – Good planning skills (seeing the bigger picture – based on what the footage does, how do I break up the masks for various body parts)
    – extreme comfort with the pen tools (I mean like second nature)
    – The ability to work quickly – get into a “Zone” where they are just blasting it away
    – patience

No matter what, it doesn’t go quickly, but it can go a lot slower form some and a lot faster for others. And without the first 2 things on that list, the others aren;t worht that much – at least in my opinion – though I have that opinion on just about any skillset.

It’s like driving a car. Some people aren’t great at it, even after 30 years of doing it, and some people are naturals and pick it up right away. But even the poeple who aren’t great at it can eventually get from point A to B – the question is how many detours they have to take to do it, and how long it ultimately takes to arrive.

Again, anyone can learn it, but not everyone is great at it and can produce material fast enough for a production environment.

Take everything I say with grain of salt. My experience is just that – MY experience. You may know differently, and that’s cool.

    Displace > Wave Warp

If you mean underwater seen from above the surface, then a combonation of Simulation > wave world (To create a wave displacement map) and Simulation > Caustics (to create the water’s specular surface and distortion, as well as underwater caustic lighting.

Technically “Rotoscoping” is painting an object or objects out of the scene, frame by frame. “Rotosplining” is using masks to cut objects out of the scene. Make sure you find out for sure what they mean by that when they ask. They are 2 different skills, though almost everyone I know calls them the same thing.

I feel it needs to be mentioned that it is not easy or fun, and possibly the most tedious work a compositing artist has to do. It takes a long time too.

I suck at it, and don’t take gigs that require roto because I know I just can’t deliver in a timely manner.

That said, a really good roto artist is worth his/her weight in wacom pads. It’s a good skill to develop, and if you find you have a talent for it, there’s a lot of work out there when compared to regular motion graphics work.

August 16, 2005 at 12:59 pm in reply to: Stroke my alpha channel!

    What I usually do is:

    – duplicate the footage that has the alpha
    – select the bottom of the 2 peices of dupolicated footage
    – Add the following effects:
Image Control > Tint (Set black and white to the colors you want and then set it up to 100%)
Matte Tools > Simple Choker (Set the matt to a negative choke value, which spreads out the alpha channel – play with the numbers until you get what you need)

Alternatively, you could not do any of that, and select your layer and use the option called: Layer > Auto Trace. you could use the auto trace to either create a mask around your footage’s alpha channel – if it’s moving footage, like a movie, then the option above is better – or to create a new solid with the same exact alpha shape. Using that second method, you could play with the mask expansion to spread out the alpha.

Another option I just came up with is to use the Vegas Effect which can be used to simulate a stroke around an image countour. You have to set the effects hardness to 100% and set it’s start, mid, and end points to all have an opacity of 100%. Then just play with the width property for thhickness. Also, set it’s blend mode to under.

Personally i like the top method better (though i think it’s more processor intensive due to an extra piece of footage), but they all work, and you never know when one of these methods just won’t do…

August 16, 2005 at 12:46 pm in reply to: Layer Offset or Tracking Program?

It still applies. If you are working with a tracker, You need to have a point that you are tracking for this at all times – Since the object you are tracking moves off screen, I’m not sure you could do this reliably with particleIllusion alone.

I’d love to hear otherwise – since this is the kind of thing I ALWAYS do outside of pIllusion – usually in After Effects.

If I were tracking this with Adobe After Effects,I’d find a point I could track for part of it, then find another point I could track when that disappeared. As long as the crosshairs stay in the same place, the tracking region (which is actuially seperate from the crosshairs), even if moved around several times to find better tracking areas, won’t effect the position of the crosshairs, and therefore keep the track smooth.

Not having used Smooth Running Gun, I have no idea if it could do that. But if it can, then you need to do a track with several steps where you change the position of the trackeing region, but keep the track point in the exact same spot.

    Does that make any sense?

Seperate installer is right. Production bundle (professional) only, I think. Also non-educational only.
