Thanks for the shoutout about my DVD. Much appreciated. Gladf you enjoyed it.
A lot of my reel has particleIllusion and After Effects mixed in:

Thanks, Pierre. I assume that’s a “sort of yes.” Right?
I understand that no solution (other than filming progressive) is perfect, but I want the best solution possible.
Thanks.

Not a problem. Glad I helped. Can you post your video when your done? – you’ll need your own webspace for that though – they don’t provide space for that here.
There are other things you can do to enhance the effect, such as turning the particle layer back on. setting the opacity realy low, and using the “overlay” effect – it may be more trouble then it’s worth though.

Thanks for the info. I also asked about 30i – because I think my video camera may only shoot as 30i. It’s just a consumer Canon Optura 60.
So how does it fare with converting 30i to 30p.
Thanks.

Are you using the PI method, or the PI + AE method?
I assume, PI + AE becasue you rendered on Gray.
In AE turn the visibility for the particle footage off (Eyeball switch). It doesn;t need to be seen to work.
That way, all you will see is your footage, plus the distortion (which is created by adding the displacement map effect directly to the live-action footage).
If my assumption is not correct, and you are not doing it this way, please give me a step-by-step of what you are doing in both pI and AE, and I can help isolate your problem.

This effect is done similar to the matirx buttlet trail effect, which is a 3D effect.
Hopever, if you can lock down the direction of the heat vision, you can pull it off using pIllusion alone (OK) or pIllusion with AE (Better).
PILLUSION: In pIllusion, you’d need to find an emitter that does something close to the look of what you want. In the particle Properties, use the settings called Get Color from Layer and Update color from Layer. This will make the particles use the color below them as it’s own color (so you;d need to use your footage as a BG image in pIllusion) – there is a library called “color from layer” included with pIllusion, and if you use it on a BG image, you will get anidea of how it works.
PILLUSION + AE: Again find the particle shape and look that you would want transfered into heat shimmer effect. Make all particles white, black, gray, and put them on a BG color of 128 Gray (absolute or pure gray). Make sure your particles are no intense. Feel free to use your footage as a BG reference, but remember to turn it off, so that it’s rendered over a gray BG. Render out your particle Footage.
In AE, drop in your live action footage, and your particle Footage. Make the particle footage invisible (turn off it’s eyeball).
Add the following effect to the live action footage: Effect > Distort > Displacement map. Set the particle footage layer as the displacement map. Preview to see how it looks. You wil probbaly want to raise the diosplacement settings fromt he default 5 to something like 20 for both verticle and horizontal.
OK, so White (255) particles will displace the pixels in one direction, black (0) in the other, and grays in either direction, depending if they are higher or lower than 128. The BG of the aprticles are set to 128 Gray because 128 Gray is nutral for diplcaements, and will not effect the footage – and so you want most of the footage to be that absoulte gray until particle run over it.
I have a whole tutorial on this, which goes into depth abotu the nature of using pIllusion and AE for effects like these, on my Creative Cow Master Series DVD: ParticleIllusion Fusion Volume 1 – https://www.pillusionfusion.com
Hop this helps you get started.

This is the kind of thing where I would use a particle system in the Foreground (like wondertouch particleIllusion or Trapcode Particular).
In the BG, I’d make 2 or more solids layers with a featherd mask at the top, and hill-like shapes. I’d animate those layers moving up at different speeds behind the snow, until they reach the top and fill the screen.
Here’s a movie of the final result, and then a breakdown of how I did it:
https://allbetsareoff.com/Cow_Stuff/Snow_ExampleCD.mov
Hope this helps explain it.
The snow was done in particleIllusion. Very easy. Just used a preset.
