I use a similar workflow… You can run Macdrive on the XP side to access your OS X partition…works great…heres a link…

I’ve been using AE 6.5 on my own animated feature film… rendering out complex 10bit 2k comps all day and night for the past year and a half… Some of my plates are 3048 x 2072 and AE works with them just fine and I only have an AMD x2 4400 with 2gb RAM… So yeh AE is just fine for film res stuff, just don’t expect to RAM preview at full res and full quality all the time…

  • Hey Miles I recognized you from the stopmoanim message boards… I’m finishing up my stopmotion feature now so we might be able to share some experiences as I have nearly the same Computer setup as you and we are both probably working with massive image sequences from our DSLR’s… Send me an email as I would love to interact with another animator attempting the impossible 🙂

I’m running AE 7 +Pshop on a 17″ Macbook Pro on the XP side…I tried the PPro 2 demo and it worked fine… I also use a few 3d apps also on the XP side… Performance is great and its as stable as XP is gonna be… It only takes about 60 seconds to switch OS’s and if you use MAcdrive you can read and write to the OS X partition from the XP side… you can also read the XP partition from the OS X side with no additional software… I do all my general purpose computing + FCP + web stuff on the OS X side and I do compositing + 3d on the XP side it works out really great… The only issues I’ve run into are… You can’t route audio to the headphone port under XP, and there is no easy way to right click with the trackpad under XP so the use of a mouse is a must… I don’t have any bluetooth devices so I dont know if that works or not… I push my systems pretty hard and I haven’t run into any major issues under XP on my MAcbook Pro… it really is like having 2 systems in one…Also if you use MAcdrive 6.12 you can read/write to Mac formatted firewire/Usb external drives if you need to access large files from both OS’s….

Actually I had the name wrong…the motion blur plug is called “Vixol” I was able to download it for free from the Core Arsenal site before it went down… It’s the Windows Installer… Here’s the file…

For c4d you would need to get the free Ralf plugin from Core Particle Tools… it allows you to export a velocity pass from C4d to AE… You can use the channel to drive Reelsmart motion blur.. It works pretty well..Core particle tools went out of business so you might have a hard time finding it…

I’m also interested in hearing about this Blackmagic codec incompatibility… I’m thinking of upgrading from 6.5 to 7 but I have tons of 10bit Blackmagic files…Is there a problem with them in 7?

I know After Effects has lots of problems with QT 7+ so maybe Commotion does as well?…. I’m running Commotion Pro 4.1 on XP Pro with QT 6.5 and it works just fine… You might want to downgrade your QT if possible.

I integrate Cinema 4d scenes into After Effects projects all day and I can say that Maxon has done an awesome job 🙂
