I just realised I used the term ‘online’ when I should have said ‘OFFLINE’ a few times in my post, making it confusing. Below is the fixed version…..sorry!:
I am onlining a project that was shot in HDV.
When I look at the offline clips the codec says DV / DVCPro – NTSC. The frame rate is 29.97.
The project was then uprezzed, by re-digitizing the footage using the DVCProHD codec with a Kona card.
In the online version, clips that have been slowed down using the ‘Speed’ effect have a bad ‘staggered’ look – it’s not smooth like in the OFFline. If we use the ‘shift fields’ filter at ‘+1’ on these clips, the effect looks a bit smoother, but still not as good as the OFFline version.
Does anyone know anything about this problem and any solutions?
Thanks in advance,

The SD footage is 4:3. However we are resizing so it fills the screen – hence we are obviously losing a lot of resolution – as well as effectively cropping a lot out – but like I say, this process was already well underway before I got here…and the thing is we are not going to re-do work that’s already been done…..so I was just trying to work out a workflow that replicates the end results already achieved (for consistancy of look etc), but requires less steps….
Like I say…..the process is very compromised from a technical / quality point of view…..but the producers seemed satisfied with the look – so I have been trying to figure out a slightly more efficient way to get there…..

Hi Shane,
I take it these droplets are for converting DV footage only??? (ie – not 8 bit uncompressed SD – which is what I am dealing with)?

Hi Wayne,
The offline editing is complete. We are in the process of onlining – almost everything has been captured at hi res – but the standard def stuff was captured at 8 bit uncompressed – and so we are manually resizing it in the motion tab, then converting to the DVCProHD codec by exporting as a quicktime movie with that codec and reimporting. We are doing this because if we simply make the changes with the motion tab and render in the DVCProHD timeline, the results are inconsistant – sometimes it looks ok, sometimes the movement is all jittery. If we do this extra step, and overcut the new movie, the results are better – I know this process is not the best, but it is what they were doing when I started work on the project – hence I am trying to devise a better workflow…

Hi Wayne,
I have come onto this project about %70 of the way through…everything has already been captured and a lot of work has already been done…..so I am stuck with certain compromises etc from what happened before I got involved…..
Thanks for the suggestion for next time though…..

Yes…..this article does clarify things somewhat…….although it does not tell me how to know if the footage on the tape is 24p normal or advanced – is there any way I can tell this from the tape? When I play back the tape from the camera and view it on an NTSC screen, through the RCA out connectors, it looks fine – does not stutter etc – so does this mean the footage is definately 24p normal – or is the camera capable of giving good playback regardless of the mode?
Any other ideas on how I can work this out?
Thanks

Ok….I am getting somewhere now…..
I have checked the XL2 camera manual that I am using to digitize with and it does have two modes of 24p as you suggest.
Is there any way to tell from already recorded tapes what form of 24p is on the tape?
If it is 24p standard, I understand I will need to use cinema tools after I digitize in order to edit in true 24p – can you point me to anywhere that explains this process in a practical step by step way – I have not used cinema tools before.
Also – what are the implications if some of the footage was shot in 24p standard and some of it in 24p advanced?
Thanks again….

Hi,
So I have captured footage using the DV NTSC Advanced Pulldown removal setting….
Then when I look at the footage information on the clips, it says the video rate is 29.97…..
What kind of sequence should I be using? – what are the settings for the sequence so that I will be editing in 24p (without need to render)….
I am getting very concerned that this isn’t working as it should…..
Thanks….

NTSC DV 24p is the format…..
I am having big trouble making sure that what I end up with in Final Cut Pro is 24p material…..
Any suggestions? Getting desperate…

Thanks for those suggestions….
Those apps look great and I will suggest to my boss that the company buys one of them…..
But in the meantime I have actually found a freeware player that will do it:
Sebsky Tools: https://www.dharmafilm.com/sebskytools/download.html
This little app converts FCP media files to AVID omfi and vica versa……but also can just play quicktimes and display the correct timecode off the tape….
Doesn’t have all the great logging tools those other apps suggested have…..but will do the job for a while…..
