You mean the just announced Multibridge Studio. I meant the Multbridge SD or HD.

First question: The Multibridge include a Decklink card in the package, you don’t need to buy one. The SD version comes with a plain Decklink card (which is fine, since it connects through SDI) and the Mulltibridge HD comes with a Decklink HD (I don’t remember if HD or HD Pro). So, in any case, the PCI card is included.
Second question: I don’t know, they said they were about to ship real soon.Adolfo Rozenfeld

I think the key to answering this question is – do you need a special way, up to “motion graphics standards”, in the way you want to go from a picture to the other? If yes, then doing it in Motion will offer more power. If you just will mix them with cuts and dissolves, producing them on an individual basis and sending them to FCP will give you more versatility in terms of editing – motion graphics applications are not really designed for easy cutting between takes, that’s where editing applications shine.
Both workflows are completely valid. Last time a friend from the Cow questioned an aspect of my workflow, I got quite angry and later had to apologize. So you see, workflows are a very personal thing 🙂

“Will all are uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2 media be readable by the decklink cards”
Yes, it’s a standard Quicktime codec installed by Final Cut Pro. The Decklink cards support it just like the IO (or even better, one could say). The only thing you will have to change is the video/audio monitoring device settings.
“If so, what’s the downside to using media as is instead of re-digging with Blackmagic’s uncompressed codec?”
No downside at all. Blackmagic designed their codec before the Apple Uncompressed codec came out. When Apple released it with FCP 4.x, Blackmagic added support for RT Extreme with Apple’s codecs (DV25, DV50, uncompressed 8 and 10 bit, PhotoJPEG is supported but no RT). Notice that Decklink’s easy set-ups default to Apple uncompressed, not Blackmagic’s codec.
The Blackmagic codec is used now mostly for Mac <> Windows interoperbility, since it is compatible with Apple Uncompressed (and this alllows Windows people to render uncompressed files for FCP). The Blackmagic codec is also useful because of its ability to read files made with other borads, like Digital Voodoo and Cinewave.

May 2, 2005 at 2:10 am in reply to: Odd Compression Issue Layinf Off DV50 footage to BetaWell, one advantage of using a device like the Decklink is that it sends DV50 (or DV25 for that matter) out through analog component. You only need to use Blackmagic’s DV50 easy set-up. That’s all you need to make Beta SP dubs. DV50 is usually excellent quality for handling Beta SP or going to Beta SP, so if it looks really bad, you’re probably doing something wrong (or as you’ll read below, not doing anything wrong but could be looking at a lo res version).
Bear in mind two things, though. Unlike Uncompressed 8 or 10 bit, DV50 is lower field first. Also, like DV25 and unlike uncompressed, NTSC frame size is 720×480, not 720×486. If you export from AE or FCP to DV50 with upper field first and D1 size, you’ll have field issues.
The other thing that perhaps might help – Just like with DV25, DV50 files captured or rendered from Final Cut Pro have the Quicktime “high quality” flag turned off. The quality is there, but if you open the movies in Quicktime player, you’ll see them at half res. Just in case… You can turn on High quality from within the QT player or watch the results through the Decklink or DV50/Firewire.

No, I don’t think it does. Most motion graphics applications depend on another application for capturing and printing to tape. That said, notice that Motion particularly shines with uncompressed boards like Decklink or AJA Kona and those boards usually come with simple (and free) applications for capturing and printing to video. If you’re doing just DV, you could use Final Cut Express or an even lower priced capture application like BTV Pro (sharewre).

Would you please check in system profiler which model and brand the DVD burner is? I am about to buy a DL burner for my G5 and I would like it to be natively supported by Tiger, so knowing which one Apple is using would be very helpful. Many thanks!

April 26, 2005 at 4:01 pm in reply to: Motion into Final Cut Pro HD, what is the correct way to use Motion in FCP?1-. What I mean is that you save yourself the disk space required by a rendered file from Motion. The render you do in FCP’s timeline will likely be smaller in size, because you’re surely working with DV and a file rendered from Motion with transparency uses an uncompressed codec called Animation. As I said, just import Motion’s project file into FCP.
2-. In FCP, but only do that if you experience the problem I mentioned. If not, it’s not necessary.
3-. By default, Motion mantains the transparent background. Especially if you import the Motion project instead of rendering a file from Motion (because most codecs don’t support embedded transparecy).
