What are your Fast Previews preferences (OpenGL – Interactive, OpenGL – Always On, Adaptive Resolution, etc)?
Do you have “Use Display Ccolor Management” turned on in the View menu? Do you have something assigned for “Simulate Output” in the same menu?

  • It’s not a bug, April.
If you follow the link to the AE Help page Todd posted above, you’ll find a list of operations which break the 3D compositing bin.

August 19, 2009 at 5:17 pm in reply to: HD export in After Effects

You don’t need a specific HD export option.
Renders from the Render Queue automatically honor Composition settings like frame size, frame rate and pixel aspect ratio.
Provided your Comp is 1920×1080 at 25 fps, just add it to the Render Queue (Composition > Add to Render Queue, or just drag the Comp icon from Project panel to the RQ).
If you’re on a Mac, the default lossless setting specify Quicktime format with the Animation (lossless) codec. You could change it to the the Uncompressed codec in the format options inside the Output Module. If you’re on Windows, you’d have to change the format to Quicktime and pick Animation or Uncompressed as the codec.

Jason: that would work if there were no changes to the transform properties. If there were, scale, rotation, etc would be applied externally to the Pre-Comp, which is what you don’t want in this case, right?

August 19, 2009 at 3:36 pm in reply to: How ro move clip without keyframes?

From After Effects Help, Move a layer duration bar but not its keyframes

    1. Make a note of the time at which the first keyframe appears.
    2. In the layer outline, click the name of one or more layer properties containing the keyframes you want to keep at the same times.
    3. Choose Edit > Cut.
    4. Move or stretch the layer duration bar to its new In and Out points.
    5. Move the current-time indicator to the time at which the first keyframe appeared before you cut the keyframes.
    6. Choose Edit > Paste.

Cut the mask, Pre-compose the layer (using the second option in the Pre-compose dialog, “Move all attributes”) then paste the mask into the resulting Pre-Comp. Rotate the layer nested inside the Pre-comp. This will let you rotate the layer without affecting the mask applied to the Pre-Comp.

Second method: Create a new Comp-sized solid and place it immediately above your layer. Cut the mask and paste into the solid, then set the solid as a Track Matte for the layer below.

Enabling CM for your project will help making color more consistent, especially if you are working with other CM-aware applications, such as Photoshop. To take fulll advantage of it, you really want to calibrate your computer display with a monitor calibration device (some of them can be bought now for under $100!)

Linearizing the color space is a choice, not a requirement. It makes color/transparency/blend operations follow the same behavior as “real light”, sort of speak. Yes, it will change the look of your project, so if you decide you like that behavior, it’s better to enable when you start working on a new project.
The most typical project working space for HD content is HDTV REC.709

There’s a very comprehensive white paper on CM in AE available here:
    https://www.adobe.com/devnet/aftereffects/articles/color_management_workflow.html

I think taking a look will really make things more clear.

  • Win or Mac? Which AE version?
Is it possible that you have the num lock key on in your keyboard? Could you try using a different keyboard and see if it goes away?
I saw a couple of posts from people with the same problem, and it does seem keyboard related.
