One of these ways could be using the Stroke layer style instead of the stroke attribute for text.Adolfo Rozenfeld · Adobe

July 18, 2009 at 8:28 am in reply to: After Effects CS4 gradient + stroke text problemYou didn’t mention how you are applying a gradient, and there are many ways to do that. It could be the “Gradient Overlay” layer style or the “Ramp” effect, as two examples. But in any of these cases it makes sense that you loose the stroke visibility, since these gradients are not text attributes but effects which are overlayed over an image. As a consequence, the gradient is composited over the whole text layer, including the stroke.

Most likely because of hyper-threading (virtual cores), featured in the processor architecture (Nehalem) used by the Xeon CPUs in recent Mac Pros.
In most cases, I’d recommend setting AE to use the four physical cores (by using the “Leave CPUs free” setting in Memory and multiprocessing prefs). If for no other reason, because feeding 8 rendering instances adequately requires a LOT of RAM (2 GB per process, as a starting point). Even if you had such an amount of RAM, I doubt launching rendering instances for virtual cores will lead to faster rendering speeds (but sounds like a nice experiment!)Adolfo Rozenfeld · Adobe

Yes, I understand there are some issues with Magic Bullet. I suggest you contact them to learn their plans.
As for not being able to update, there’s now probably something missing in your AE install.
So, as painful as it is, I would recommend using the installer or Add/Remove programs control panel to uninstall, then install again (without Magic Bullet, of course), and then update to 9.02.I am sorry to hear about your problem with tech support.
Let me say that this troubleshooting procedure is described in the technical support documents about crashes in AE. If you let me know which OS you use (XP/Vista/MAc OS), I’ll be happy to point you to the specific document.
In any case, this is why people like Todd and I try to be available on web forums to help users. Not to mention the amazing community of AE users 🙂Adolfo Rozenfeld · Adobe

[anita sancha] “Import both, and if I open as a timeline, the main comp from only one of these, AE will use the same performance as if I opened each of the projects separately as individual projects.
If I leave open one of the main comps and then open the other main comp in the timeline as well, does this reduce the performance, even if there are no nested comps relevant to the other projects main comp.”
Anita: Comps only use significant resources when you are working directly on them. They do not take that much CPU cycles or RAM when they are idle, even if they are open. Just so it’s clear, you could have 35 wildly complex Comps, and when you’re working on one of them, the others one barely exist. Unless one or more of these is nested inside, of course.
This is an oversimplification, because RAM gets fragmented over time. You can fix this by purging (Edit > Purge) when things slow down, or re-launch the application. My sources are all image sequences taga or png (uncompressed with alpha) HD.”
This will probably tax more your hard drives than your CPUs or RAM memory.

Make sure you update to 9.02. It addresses a number of situations that led to crashes on launch. So, before anything, make sure you update to AE CS4 9.02.
MediaCore is the media/format handling layer in AE. You probably have a third party codec which doesn’t play along well. Make sure you remove third party codecs you may have, and if the application launches correctly, you can add them back one at a time until you find the culprit.Adolfo Rozenfeld · Adobe

That’s actually not correct.
OpenGL rendering is not meant to be a means for producing high-quality end results in rendered files from AE. So graphics cards, no matter how powerful, will not affect Render Queue renders at all. The exception is enabling the OpenGL renderer, but this will give you different results (more draft-like) than the software renderer.Nvidia has a model tailored for the CS4 applications (Quadro CX).
This and other high-end models should give you a very nice experience in terms of having smooth interactions when adjusting parameters and dragging layers around, but they will not improve rendering speeds. This card will also provide advantages when using OpenGL accelerated features in Photoshop CS4 (3D, zooming/panning, etc), and I understand it also provides acceleration for some features in Premiere Pro. Overall, you can expect the drivers for this card to work nicely with CS4 apps, which is of course a good thing. So, it could be a good investment – just don’t expect it to speed up AE renders. Finally, bear in mind that with a configuration like you have now, you probably are getting render times 10-20x faster than you would have had a couple of years ago. This is nothing short of amazing, and it’s not only a consequence of modern hardware, but also of the multi-processing feature in AE.

Anita:
Performance will be more directly affected by the kind of operations you perform, and the kind of source files you use, than by having several comps living in the same project. In fact, Comps and source files which are part of the resulting project but are not open in a Comp viewer, they are there doing nothing. They don’t really affect performance in any significant way.
You can import a project into an existing project – just use the Import feature instead of Open, as you normally do with projects. All Comps are source files from the imported will appear in a folder in the project panel.
In any case, if you’re worried, you can try this and experiment for a few minutes without saving the resulting project, to see if you’re satisfied with performance. You can revert to the original project if you want.Adolfo Rozenfeld · Adobe
