its rolling shutter – Dave and Michael have the answer!

you can buy or rent an After Effects and Nuke plug-in for correcting this from https://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/rollingshutter/

I have not used it so cannot comment but they do make some amazing software.

  • forget the tweaking back and forth….either you send him a finished video and he composes to it, or you compose the graphics to the finished music!

Its mainly the Lion issue that is causing me concerns. I haven’t jumped to it yet, because of concerns that FCP7 may not be as happy with it.

As for Cudai’m on the fence – i tried using cs5.5 PPro a couple of times and had ridiculously slow load times and a whole host of other issues. I gave up in the end.

Avid is certainly looking more appealing than it did when i last used it 8 or 9 years ago – but i still feel its not quite as flexible when it comes to layering graphics etc. On the plus side, its supposed to be far more integrated with ProTools now. If i could edit and mix in the same app – that would be a big step for me.

All dreams for now – i still need to work up a cost analysis and confuse the boss some more!
Wonder if i can get him to stump up for Smoke?

thanks guys – echos many of my own thoughts.

Certainly agree about the Nvidia card… I bought my current ATI card to use mainly with Color,3 months before adobe announced the mercury engine!

Thunderbolt holds no interest for me. I don’t have any TB devices, and dont foresee getting any in the near future. All my storage is on fibre channel raids, so i just need to add to those when i need more.

Davids comments about clients leaving FCP is irrelevant to me. All the commercials i make are for our own products and the boss is only interested in results – he has not one clue about how i achieve those results.

    thanks for your thoughts.

  • you have probably tried this, but if you have reset the system, have you gone into the Sequence settings (Sequence drop down) and ticked the option for audio rendering?

it only costs £180 (not expensive in my book)- and you were asking about firewire800 because its your fastest port – and Raid is typically faster than a single drive.

Raid has two benefits with a drive like this- you can set it one way and get increased speed or set it for security by duplicating the data to both drives.

I have a Glyph Portagig62 – which is very good. Its a small portable raid made with 2x 2.5″ drives, and it is firewire 800 bus powered.

Its been extremely reliable (i got it to replace a g-raid mini which died after only three power ups!).

I’m very happy with the Glyph.

November 18, 2011 at 9:06 am in reply to: render confusion

Thanks Brian, for this model i was actually going for the reversed look on purpose! I just couldnt figure why it didnt appear in renders.

I did solve it by having both textures set to Both, whereas before i had the cover set to front and the reversed version set to back (which is how it was set when i posted the question).

I solved it but dont really understand why having them both set to Both doesn’t cause the textures to collide…i would have expected using the earlier method to be more likely to work.

  • its a long time since i used any xdcam, so i may be way off here – but i think he might need to use Log & Transfer to bring the files in, rather than just Import.
