i have just tried deleting the Render files and re-rendering, and now the problem is worse!!
The huge great colour change happens partway through the final shot, even before the Freeze frame.
If its any help – the final shot comprises several layers -1 video, 1 animation, 1 text, 1 graphic, and 1 motion project file

i think if you are seeing the problem only on the TV and not on your lcd’s, then that points to an Interlacing problem.
If you started the project in an earlier incarnation of FCP and have upgraded to 6 then you might have had FCP offer to correct field dominance errors when you first opened the exisiting project in the upgraded FCP. If you did, then FCP has probably caused the problem.
Go through your clips and check for a filter called something like “shift field” ( i forget the actual name). If its there then i bet if you deactivate each one the problem will disappear.

i’m sure many others will leap in to this thread…and i’m not going to answer your questions regarding monitors, macs etc, its too large a minefield. I know works for me, but it may not for others.
What i will say is if you want a professional edit suite, then don’t forget the other essentials – the ones often overlooked because they are not as sexy as the big bits of kit…..Waveform Monitor/Vectorscope, Audio Meters, decent quality Loudspeakers (studio monitors NOT hi-fi), and two of the most important things – a good chair (I swear by HermanMillers Mirra – cheaper than the Aeron, and twice as comfy) and a decent user interface (I hate using Mice – get a Wacom Intuos3 graphics tablet). Your health can easily suffer when sitting for countless hours staring motionless at a screen…trust me – i have the physio appointment cards to prove it!
Picture monitoring is a difficult one at present – with the death of CRT monitors and the relentless rise of LCD screens, you will probably end up with LCD. I cannot recommend any as i use a cathode ray tube. I trust the picture i get from my tube, and have yet to be overly impressed by any LCD for moving video.
Video Input – you will need a video card to capture and play out material – AJA Kona and Blackmagic seem to be the two main choices (i use AJA)
If your are going to be finishing in the suite, then what are your output format requirements? Consider getting a hardware Legaliser that can cope with those formats. (I use an Eyeheight model between output and digibeta record deck and have never had a tape rejected by a broadcaster.
A raid is pretty much a necessity, especially if you are going to be doing uncompressed or HD work. Again, many choices – Apple Xserve, Ciprico, and many others.
You sound like you are in a fortunate position – you have the ability to build a suite from scratch. I had the same situation a year ago – a clean slate with no previous kit or ingrained working practices to integrate with…just an empty room and an open minded boss!
Take the time to research not only kit, but the possible requirements of your end client (whether it be broadcast, dvds, industrial or whatever – they all have specific needs).
Buy the kit that will do the work with the least amount of hassle. And buy wisely…saving a few bucks by comparing lowest prices might seem a good idea in the immediate future, but you really need reliability, ease of use and service support.

This is the one i use, and i probably don’t use a fraction of its full functionality.
You have eight programmable keys and two slider strips (for zooms etc) on the tablet itself, two click buttons on the pen, both ends of the pen are pressure sensitive. You can set the tablet to automatically recognise different apps and have different functions specific to the app.I can’t praise it enough, and my wrist has not ached since i got it (except for when i have to use the mouse on my second mac – but i’m seeking a suitable kvm switch to sort out that problem!)

i tried one out at Broadcast Live in London a few weeks back. Next day i tried tap the boss for a rig – but i need a better reason than just “wow… its fantastic!”.
Correctly balanced, a Z1 felt so easy and smooth to control. Literally is fingertip control for pans and tilts. I was also told by the saleman that the rig now comes with a body harness included – a definite plus because its not a featherweight bit of kit, and you’ll soon start getting achey shoulders and arms without one.
It was a short time i played with it, but i would certainly stump up the money for one given half a chance.
