you do have another option with the Sapphire plug-ins (and no – i dont work for Genarts, i only noticed this the other when updating my own licence) and that is to rent them when you need them. Much cheaper this way and saves a massive outlay for things you may never use.

I know the public will be largely unaware of our current issues, I was meaning more along the lines that editors in a position to recut a scene populated with apple products, may be less inclined to edit favourably.

for a start – never use USB drives for editing video. They might have fast speeds, but data is sent in packets, whereas firewire (and i am not sure about esata) the data is a continuous stream. Packets can cause bottle necks and stuttering video.

17″ v 15″ – not really a huge size difference. Don’t forget those 2″ are diagonal dimensions across the screen, so in reality the width depth is less than 2″ (you’re a student – use Pythagorus theory to work it out!)

Connectivity via an express34 card slot is a whole lot more than just hard drives. With the express34 port you can add adapters for video i/o units. I have a Matrox MX02le which can plug straight in for digitizing and playing back on external monitors or for outputting to tape. I have adapters that let me use firewire 400 in addition to the fw800 thats built in to my laptop. Also , an eSata adapter for using really fast drives, etc,etc

The extra speed on your internal drive is less of an issue, as your software will load into ram when you start an application rather than running directly from the disc.

As for price, well unfortunately, if you want a professional tool, you need to pay for the extras that make it professional, and for a video editor those features are really only found on the 17″ model.

but then if you do decide to get Sapphire, then get the AE licence and not the FCP one. With the AE licence you can run the plug-ins in After Effects, but you can also download the FCP plug-ins and run those using the same licence (as long as its all on the same computer).

I’m not sure if this works the other way around (ie, buy fcp licence and then run AE plugs as well).

Expensive but extremely good plug-ins

check out Larry Jordans blog – he goes into some depth about the new softwares capabilities.

sadly, I won’t be upgrading for a while. All the stuff i need, Apple have decided not to include – rs422 controlled tape ingest/output, export to ProTools, Color, FCP X can’t import FCP7 projects…the list goes on. Oh well !

i have not tried this, but have recently installed one on our network and the thought did strike me as possible…

A NAS storage raid connected to a gigabit network hub into which both the laptops are also connected.

I got a Lacie 2Big Network2 because it acts as a server as well as hard drive, so multiple users can access it, and it only cost just over £200.

I’m not sure if its fast enough for your needs but is one possible avenue to research further.
