I have a spec sheet that has asked for two things: 50Mbps MPEG2 with uncompressed audio – no more specifics are given – and 15Mbps MPEG2 with the other specs as in my first post. I wondered whether these specs indicated some common format, perhaps the first is IMX but I don’t know what the second is or how to create it:
MPEG-2 Main Profile program stream, 15Mbit/sec, 4:2:0 color space, Long open GOP, width 640px, muxed audio in MPEG-1 Layer II 384kbit/sec
Is that some common format that goes by a simple name?

ah, yeah sorry, that’s what i meant, 1080i50. and thanks for the tip about 10-bit, i was wondering if that was neccessary.

I am exporting using the “Quicktime movie” option not the “using quicktime conversion”, where that interlacing option you mention lies. I choose the setting for uncompressed 8-bit PAL and there doesn’t seem to be any interlacing options here.
Yup it is 1080i25 HDV, so should be PAL compatible.
I believe it’s not interlaced because when viewing at 100% i can usually see the interlacing artefacts on the source clip. Also my broadcast monitor usually shows me a flickering still-frame on interlaced material, but not after the downconversion.

one thing that may help is to blur the chroma channel slightly, one of Joes plugins can do this for you.

Yes i totally agree, it is something you could do manually fairly easily if you had a lot of time and patience on your hands so I’m sure it would be something that could be programmed or scripted.
I got onto a guy recently who said he could write a program that could modify an XML sequence to match quicktimes based on their embedded reel and timecode but I can’t afford to pay him to do it!
I’m not a really long-term user of FCP but have used it full-time over the last few years and there have been several occasions where the ability to reconnect by another method than filename would have been really great. For example, say you “consolidate” a sequence by using the media manager to create a new project and new media with smaller handles to put on a laptop, there is no way of later linking this project back to the main media because the durations/filenames of the media have changed. All the media is there but FCP is not intelligent enough to work it out.
I was suprised to find that a relatively few people have posted similar problems to this. I think perhaps these problems can be avoided if you are very careful with your workflow and plan well ahead, and purchase plenty of drive space, but on the project I joined recently these things were not done and there is no easy way to fix them without the ability to accomplish the task discussed here.

yeah but it’s just a matter of a few sums, all the variables are set. I could do it manually by loading each quicktime from a folder and recording the timecode and reel. Then I would refer to this information when going through an XML file and modify each clip to the matching filename and appropriate frame offsets.

I know perl scripting fairly well but I don’t know how to deal with XML or how to extract timecode information from a QT file. although the flunky URL mentioned in my first post seems to have a method. his stuff uses applescript.
I have had several occasions recently where this imaginary process would have been very useful. Here is an example:
We started a project a while ago and captured around 80hours of HDV footage. unfortunately the drive went down and we lost the media, but the project files were backed up.
by this time we’d edited the project down to around 12hours so we exported EDLs of the cut down sequences and used these in a new project to recapture just this consolidated footage.
now we realise we need to reconnect media in another sequence that used footage on the original drive. I know that the media has already been recaptured in the 12 hour batch but there seems to be no way of reconnecting this sequence to these files as they have different media start and end times and possibly different filenames too.

OK we’ve just had exactly the same problem: We were working on a project with about 80% of it’s media offline. I brought in some of the media and went to reconnect them to the clips in the browser (as I have done without a problem several times recently) and the reconnect box instead of listing the offline files displayed just one line of text saying [” is missing] (square brackets not included), and FCP is unable to successfully identify the files by searching. I checked the item properties for a sample of these clips and found that the source field for them was also displaying [” is missing].
Somehow FCP seems to have forgotten the names of all the offline files, although the clip names are still intact. the online files seem to be OK. I wondered if this could hapen by telling it to FORGET FILES when loading up a project? But still, i should be able to reconnect them later on I assume and right now it won’t let me unless i do them one by one manually matching the filenames.
Luckily I had a backup on another machine, but this is worrying because it seems like illogical and unpredictble behaviour. Has anyone else got any idea what’s causing it.

I can make one small suggestion, which is to set your User Preferences to “On timecode Break: Warn after Capture” rather than “make new clip”, this solved the same problem for me.
