  • Same as Barend, but just remember that if you don’t field render back out your footage will be essentially half resolution as you’re losing the second field and getting an interpolated one instead. Sometimes if I know I’m not transforming I’ll choose not to separate the fields and do a frame render.

  • There is a known luma bug with Quicktime RGB to YUV conversion, we have seen it when encoding from Animation codec and photojpeg codecs, with the MPEG2 files ending up way too bright. As a workaround we encode from a YUV codec instead (we use the Blackmagic codec) I’m sure you could work out a levels correction to apply to your renders before encoding if you can’t do the uncompressed YUV source file, I think it’s just the gamma but not sure, I’d compress a couple of test cards, rip out a couple of frames and determine the correction.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

We’ve used FlexMorph here for it too, worked well. You’re not shooting greenscreen by any chance? The reason I’m asking is that if you’re keying the background you might get usable masks from the AutoTrace function. Just a thought,

Looks like Studio Artist to me, I’ve seen great stuff from it but never really played around with it myself, I think it’s mac only. You could also render an image sequence of a transition between two images and batch one of the stylize paint effects in photoshop, or you could use the brush strokes filter, you could use different settings for different parts of the image and composite them together. It’s going to take a bit of work no matter what you do if you want it to look nice.

  • Actually I just remembered a command that will do what you want, Command+Option+Shift+RightArrow (or Control+Alt+Shift+RightArrow) brings you to the next in or out point regardless of what’s currently selected, however it doesn’t bring you to the last frame of the layer, it brings you to the one after, try it, I think it’s what you want.

PS left arrow moves the other direction naturally enough, and since it’s already got a key command you can change it to Shift+o if you want, look for the lines below in the keyboard preferences file:

    [“CCompTime”]
    “TimeFastForward” = “(Cmd+Option+RightArrow)(END)”
    “TimeJumpToIn” = “(I)”
    “TimeJumpToNextInOut” = “(Cmd+Option+Shift+RightArrow)”
    “TimeJumpToOut” = “(O)”
    “TimeJumpToPrevInOut” = “(Cmd+Option+Shift+LeftArrow)”

  • Actually you can change shortcut keys in After Effects, just not through the interface, next to the preferences file is a keyboard shortcut file, I had to edit it because some of my shortcuts weren’t working until I switched option for cntrl (copy and paste interpretation). Unfortunately you can’t make an action and assign a key, or get full access to all the commands the way you can with photoshop or final cut pro, if it doesn’t have a shortcut already you can’t make one. You can access a lot of stuff with scripting but I’ve been kind of hoping that version 7 will have actions like photoshop so I won’t have to learn it.

  • I could be that the clip/nested layer has a different framerate than the current comp, when moving within a comp you can usually only move at intervals of the comps framerate, the playhead snaps to the start of the nearest frame, so it’s often possible that you are not seeing the last frame of the layer. It can lead to surprizes when you do a field render when fields appear that you cannot see when in the comp (double the comps framerate in this case).
Maybe you’re talking about something else completely,

I can’t really help with the text issue but we had trouble with gamma shifts between versions of the Blackmagic codecs, copy the codec from one machine to the others, overwriting the other file to make sure they’ve all got the same version install, sometimes there is no way to tell they’re different versions. I’d recommend doing the same thing with the fonts to make sure they’re all using exactly the same one. With any luck it’s nothing to do with the differently OS’s on the boxes. We found text tracking/kerning changes between AE6.0 and AE6.5 which was a real pain.
If you can’t fix it just try to figure out which machines render “right” or at least the same as each other and exclude others from the render, we often have to do that with our 3d render farm as sometimes a box won’t load a texture correctly.

December 21, 2005 at 1:53 am in reply to: Interlacing Confusion – Argh

Check that the footage is interpreted correctly in your after effects project, it needs to be separating the fields (upper or lower first for Pal DV? I can’t remember) then you need to do a field render with the same field order.
That should work, I wouldn’t worry too much about which application is showing you the right thing as some of them deinterlace and some don’t.
    Hope this helps,
