I just tried a couple of mp3’s on my PC to see if I got any error but they came in fine, either your system is acting up or there really is something odd with the mp3’s in question (I’m really hoping that it’s not as a result of an update that’s run on your machine and not mine, usually they’re the things that mess stuff up the most).

We get some bizarre pulldown patterns from cartoon stuff all the time, yours could have been a weird telecine or just messed up in an nle before you got it. I’m afraid the only solution we have is to either separate the fields and work at half rez or manually fix them by hand. I wish someone would write a decent plugin for this, or that after effects would deal with breaks in cadence better. Unfortunately all of the deinterlacing plugins I’ve tried assume that your source is interlaced rather than trying to intelligently recreate whole frames from non standard plugins. I was told once that the only application that could really deal with mixed cadence was Cleaner 4 (I think might have been another revision) but that the next version broke it.

There is something off somewhere, After Effects is always RGB but you should be able to make the round trip without any noticeable quality drop. I don’t know what you’re doing in after effects but try these steps to try and narrow down the problem:

a. Bring your final cut export back into your timeline before after effects processing to make sure the export didn’t mess it up.

b. Render a clip straight from after effects without any effects or transformations to see if something is off in your project, render to 10bit and lossless animation and bring them both into final cut to see if they’re messed up. Make sure your render settings are at best quality and not current or anything else. (I always recommend setting the default to best for all outputs as one of the first changes to settings on a new box or install)

When you bring the after effect renders back into final cut do they have to render in your sequence or do they match the sequence settings.

I’ve always been able to import mp3’s directly, just checked on the mac here at work and it still works. They always have a crackle and pop to them that results in Steve’s workaround but it’s nice when you just want to try a couple of tracks to find what you really want to use.
I don’t think it makes any difference whether you go to .wav, .aiff or .mov as long as it’s uncompressed audio.
It sounds like there was something fishy about your original source file, maybe it wasn’t really an mp3 but with an mp3 extension or something like that, Quicktime is usually better at sorting out discrepancies like that than after effects.

Mostly Decklink coax spdif out to flying cow to yamaha (MSP5) powered monitors. We got a couple of Edirol MA20D powered monitors too which have both optical and coax in so you can get the decklink and G5 spdif without unhooking anything.

Thanks for all the advice, we are just going to use the second desktop output but it looks like we will need to recompress to DV anyway, for some reason when we try to do it with the photojpeg sequence the colours get messed up (looks like incorrect YUV vs RGB colour space, you know those lovely psychedelic pinks and greens!!) tried all the settings with no luck, the DV sequence works fine though, plus we have the backup option of the firewire output if necessary. I did a test and I’m getting faster than realtime recompression to DV on a dual 2.7 GHz machine using the media manager so it’s not a big deal. It does suck that the data rate for DV is greater than photojpeg, I love that codec, if you haven’t tried it check it out, 75% quality seems to be the sweet spot, of course it’s best with a Decklink card for output.

I don’t know about Boujou but exporting from PFTrack should work, I don’t have it on the box now but I think you have to right click on the export word to add an export, the one I used was the same maya camera as you used for Boujou.
