December 21, 2007 at 8:03 pm in reply to: eclipse test failed – protokol screenshots …Hi Silvio,
Your Images are probably fine, but MediaOne is either having problems reading your DVD-R’s, or there’s an error on your platters (have you been appropriately admonished yet not to use DVD-R for Image replication submission?).
I’ve got a plan, but I’ve already passed my limit of one job offering per week on the boards, so we’ll have to think of something else. In the meanwhile, you should resubmit on DLT IV tapes written by a DLT 8000 drive (DLT 4000’s can be troublesome at replicators at times, too).
Let me know,
Trai

Hi Mike,
You’ve got a DVD authored with Multiple PGCs (‘Program Chains’) in the particular Title.
If the project was authored with the ReelDVD authoring system, it cannot create DVDs that show running time, as it exclusively contructs those types of Titles (long ‘DVD spec’ story).
If DVD Studio Pro was used, then they set the Next and/or Previous jump for the Track in question in the Connections Window; which forces a “multi-PGC” Title.
Scenarist, DVDLabPro, Creator and other direct DVD spec access authoring systems make it real easy to set up multiple PGC Titles, inadvertantly or by design.
So, if you want players to display running time you’ll need to reject this submission, and instruct the vendor to reauthor with single PGC Titles (don’t set the Next and/or Previous settings in DVD SP’s Advanced Connections Window view for the Track).
Proofing’s kinda fun, eh?
Take care,

May 11, 2007 at 2:08 am in reply to: Problems with Mastering DDP – keeps saying discs are multisessionNow, you’re hard drive submission preference was right on, Lukeny :-), which I also share.
But Kermit, if you go with a DLT 8000 drive (inexpensive on eBay) and DLT Type IV tape, you’ll hardly find a replicator complain about taking too long to extract the Image, and/or try to stear you towards DVD-Recordable submission of your (and your clients’) master.
And Lukeny, I’m glad to hear you offer your customers the ability to submit Images on Hard drives; a lot of replicators don’t.
Take care,

DVDVerification.comPS Lukeny (I couldn’t find a way to contact you privately): may I ask what the heck you guys are showing with the new Eclipse 5’s UDF verifier? Are your clients seeing all these warnings in the reports, especially with Scenarist formatted Images (DVD Studio Pro projects have relatively clean UDF structures)? Or are you setting the rules to ignore these UDF abnormalities present in all Scenarist discs?
I’ve been beta testing Eclipse Image Analysis 5 (and the upcoming 6, which is the HD DVD/Blu Ray version) for over a year now, and have determined that these ‘standard’ UDF warnings returned by Eclipse IA 5 in all Scenarist Images don’t effect playability (at least in my 70 players).
But you know how it is when good folks see something flagged as ‘incorrect’ with their Images!? I like to report squeaky clean Images for replication to my authorihng house clients.
So, just wondering how you’re going to explain these UDF issues to your customers? And while I have you; what is your take on these UDF errors and warnings, especially with Scenarist Images?
Many thanks.

May 9, 2007 at 2:09 pm in reply to: Problems with Mastering DDP – keeps saying discs are multisessionHi Kermit,
The “flaw” in your process is you’re not using DLT (I’m sure you’re thrilled to hear that).
Professional submission of DDP Images to the plant for Standard Def DVD projects is on DLT, Hard drive, or by FTP.
Sorry you’re having issues.

Hi ggDeLarge,
Every Sonic authoring house will come across the need for DVD SP and the couple of utilities that support it, sooner or later (or every week, depending on the clients needs); due to a crucial feature left out of its tool set. And DVD SP leaves out a couple of capabilities that only Scenarist allows. DVD SP has some ultilities that can extend it’s range, but thre’s still those couple of features that will need the Big Boy.
However, In both scenarios (DVD SP vs Sonic, or, DVD SP and supporting utilities vs Sonic), the authors conceptual grasp of the physics of DVD authoring is paramount; as it’s entirely possible for the author to create quite a tangled navigational web in S

March 25, 2007 at 7:19 pm in reply to: Is a DVDSP Master good enough for Replication?Hi Morgan,
Couldn’t find your email. On a job like that, it would be good for us to talk.
Only DLT should be used for Image submissions on jobs for paying clients, for instance; and there’s a gaggle of potential gotcha’s with the workflow you describe – DVD SP project authoring/settings among them.
I’m at “trai (at) comcast.net” , if you’d like to consider some needed preflighting (I’m assuming this is an important client).
Otherwise, with all respect (really), it would be best to get this project to a house with experience going to replication, and even with a Scenarist system (though, I should stll check their output for you).
Take care,

March 17, 2007 at 7:46 pm in reply to: First Play Dom authoring questionHi Pierre and Eric,
There is a way. And I’m almost finished with the article describing how all DVDs should First Play. This is a major revision to my 2001 article “The Most Perfect Startup Action”. Restarting from true stop as the author wishes is just one of the benefits (works with DVD SP and Spec based systems).
This authoring strategy will be just one of the benefits of the new DVD Producers’ Guild organization that should (there’s that ‘word’, Eric 🙂 launch coinciding with NAB next month.
Sorry for being so coy, but this is a doozie! (now, no giving it away Eric; I partially revealed this procedure to you when we talked last month).
Of course, if anyone wants to contact me, fill out the paperwork, sign the NDA, and agree to the by-laws, etc., and go ahead with the yearly dues in advance, we’ll set you up with membership right away; and I’ll get you the procedure. Otherwise, I’ll let you know when things are ready, and be in touch.
Thanks for your patience,
Trai

December 14, 2006 at 9:45 am in reply to: Replication problem, who’s fault?Very good, Soofercat,
Just know, that at this stage, everyone’s in cover their you-know-what mode. Your good author has no way of knowing what was sent in, he didn’t really ‘verify’ the DLT tapes (please see the second page of this article, here); and the replicator just manufactured a DVD that doesn’t work, regardless of who’s at fault. Ouch.
As far as costs go; you wouldn’t happen to be an Indie Film maker would you? If not, then at least you’d soon be limping around and batting one handed, with a working DVD 🙂
Take care,
Trai

December 14, 2006 at 9:11 am in reply to: Replication problem, who’s fault?Hi Stoofercat,
You could have a combination of factors going on with this one. Best to get this project into the hands of a qualified fourth party.
I know someone, if you’re interested 🙂
Sorry you’re having issues with your DVD,

September 15, 2006 at 5:44 pm in reply to: Do CSS and Ripguard conflict?Hi Noah,
Yes, you can put those three schemes onto the same disc. Each are designed to plug a different ‘hole’, and they don’t conflict. Macrovision requires the same 2054 byte sector sizes as CSS formatting does, so usually CSS and Macrovision go together when analog protection is implemented.
I remain neutral on the issue of copy protection. If the client wants it, that’s their prerogative and you won’t hear a peep out of me (the folks who are going to rip and copy will do so easily, no matter what our thoughts are on the matter 🙂
Though, I might let out that there’s no way I’d put Macrovision on any DVD; I’ve seen too many TV’s undulate bright and dark while running a DVD with it!
Take care,
Trai
