    Honestly,

I’d hold off and see how this X2 product plays out at NAB. It’s their new capture card and has built in support for HD and HDV along with all the features of the RTX100. If it does what it promises for a cost effective solution, it’d be worth holding off a few months till reviews come out for it.

Avid’s not really a prudent solution. I’ve yet to see an Avid that rendered quickly. Avid gets by a lot on name alone, IMO. I think their editing is perfect for filmmakers that edited film and are going digital. But for a new user, you’ll be confounded for a good long while, and you’ll find your skill set doesn’t apply directly to any other editing software (which is fine for some, since most Avid users tend to be very insular about their purchase)

All said and done, I like my RTX100. I don’t have the cash, nor the business to do upgrades like crazy, so as much as I’d like a dual AMD system, it ain’t happening anytime soon. I also like having the WYSIWYG output and the realtime MPEG2 rendering is nice too, for my system’s specs are about 2 years old.

  • I’ve got a Athalon 2700, and it won’t install the 2.0 software.

  • I don’t have one yet, but it’s building a strong case…

My reason for asking is that I’ve encountered roadblocks on getting some of the Collection 2 software to install on certain WinXP configurations (like Premiere and Encore are picky about the CPU in the system for some reason…)

I’d heard that Adobe was taking the development back to OSX with all their video software. As much as I love my Matrox card, getting off of Windows would be very appealing if I can still edit in PPro.

I guess when leopard comes preinstalled on a PowerMac Intel, I’ll consider switching…

You want a “future proof” PC? You should really, honestly spend a bit of cash on an AMD64. Really. It’ll blow your mind to see how fast it is running like that. You’ll probably spend a few thousand to get it running right, but it’ll be miles ahead of the competition, and smoking hot fast.

I’d hold off on taking the test until the 2.0 tests come out.

If you’ve trained on 6.0, you’re off a bit from taking the 2.0 tests, or even the 1.5 tests. There are very specific questions that address features that are specific to each version.

You might also take a step back and question why you’re taking the tests. Unless you’re planning on marketing yourself rather heavily, you won’t see a great deal of benefits from the Adobe Certs. I got certified in a pretty saturated local Adobe user base, and it only minimally increased my work. I was planning on that Certification to help me rise above the rest, but it really only mattered to those who were looking for training rather than those who were looking for an editor. Your local mileage may vary…

There certainly are enough people out there that do get benefits from it. A few posters on this board are greatly benefitting from it.

The best course of action to take, is if you’re in this for the training work, do it, and then go seek the Adobe Certified Instructor status. Getting to that point carries some substantial weight that’s worth gaining.

If you’re from a foreign country outside the US, be prepared to send a scan of your CC.

I used to work for a vendor, and we got lots of requests from lots of countries wanting software. It can’t be relied upon anymore for a simple number to validate your purchase, hence the scan of a card.

We have had lots of sales to a random smattering of countries that people would have a right to be wary of, but when they provided a real credit card verification to backup the sale, there’s no reason not to.

I’ll vouch for Videoguys, B&H, Biway Media, ProTape, Videotex Systems, DV411… They’re all reliable vendors of Adobe products.

Dealers and selected/trusted users are usually the first who get access to Matrox’s beta drivers.

From what I’ve ever been exposed to, they usually don’t do a beta release to all dealers until it’s about 4-6 weeks from shipping for everyone.

There’s a time displacing filter in the Sapphire plugin pack that does exactly this.

“Time Slice” adds in the proper look of rewinding/ffwding footage. It also adds a funky wobbly look to it when you choose to deinterlace the filter.

Matrox drivers are pretty painless to install. if you want the benefits from the card, it’s worth going with it now.

I’m waiting till April before buying into PPro 2.0 personally…

The Dell 24″ widescreens are fantastic looking. Well worth the investment if you can pull the $.

I would totally advise against 17″ monitors. You can find good-okay 19″ CRTs ($100 apiece) if price is a concern. Shop around and get a nice pair. At least 19″… Your eyes will thank you come 2 am on the 2nd consecutive all nighter.

I use a nice pair of Viewsonic GS790 monitors on my rig, and I won’t change em till they die.
