thanks brian, that was going to be my 2nd guess, but since im new to cinema, i didnt know if it could do geometry/texture reveals like that. in my past experience, this is a render time effect, but it looks like hes getting thickness to the surface, so i wasnt sure ( unless there is a way to do this in cinema that is live in the viewport?). thats why i assumed he did some magic and put the whole thing in a cloth nurbs or something for some thickness.

ah yes, closer look definitely shows the white areas are missing in in between thickness polys. you can clearly see the inner and outer faces, but nothing connecting them.

hmm, ok, id hafta fiddle around with it. hooking things up in cinema is still a bit wierd for me, coming from a maya background. seems theres a different ways to hook up each effector and i never know which method is correct.

thanks for the help though… if i get stuck again ill repost.

sorry Adam, my bad, your step effector did indeed work. i was having trouble getting the same look to happen with the plain blending version. it seems that with the 2 splines the PLA doesnt have the same effect of offsetting over time. i guess this is because 1 spline is straight, and 1 is bent, and its only blending between their shape, but not doing a time offset like the step modifier. is there a way around this? just curious. thanks again!

Adam, thanks for the scene. great to see 2 different options ontop of the one already covered in the tutorial! im new to C4d, so im going thru the file trying to see exactly how it all hooks up, but i appreciate the fast response!

opps, spoke too soon! so iv modified your scene a bit. i added some PLA to the splines. while it does affect the sweeps and the clones, it still only uses that PLA movement once, applying it globally to all clones at the same time. INSTEAD, is it possible to have that animation read with an offset? hopefully im making sense.

as far as resizing goes, i personal like bilinear filtering. i did a test using all the sampling options and settled on bilinear as the best. i regularly create big PS comps from 21mp 5dMk2 files, and regularly scale them down for web. bilinear always seems to give the best restuls. just my .02

not sure if anyone saw my post above? its a reply to Angelo’s comment, and it contains more info on the project im rendering.

either way, i just rendered it again with MP OFF and it rendered fine. started right up…. no hanging. maybe a fluke? i dunno.

i dont think anything TOO complicated is going on. i have maybe 4 instances of turbulent noise applied to various layers, as well as that many roughen edges. i think TN would definitely give it something to chew on, especially 4 of them, but besides that, its just straight keys and a few simple expressions.

    graphics card is a GTX 580 3gb. win7 x64 w/16gb.

iv read a few articles on AE memory usage and what not, and most say the newer versions do a good job on their own so dont worry about it. not to helpful. so my personal rule for MP settings is that if its a project that requires loading lots of footage, or high res images, set fewer threads, with more ram per.

i had it set to use 1gb of ram per render thread when this problem occured, and i think 4gb reserved for windows. iv yet to do a test with MP disabled… since i got the render to work eventually i was happy enough at that.

i know AE needs to get organized before it starts rendering, and most of the time renders start promptly enough. its only been occaisionally when it gets realy slow. it usualy seems to happen when i go from half res test renders, to full res (1920). though im starting to think its happening more frequently now and im starting to be afraid of having to do renders! it also seems to take a very long time for ram previews to start. im guessing it may be related to the same MP issue. i realy havent spent enough time trying to find work arounds because its not that huge a deal and it usualy works, eventually.

so far its nothing thats a deal breaker, so to speak… just annoyances that i gotta work around.

dunno, that seems like a cheat. if you just wanna compare apples to apples performance, i think it makes more sense to just load up the project and go for it. its nice to have the benefit in 6 if stuff is cached, but thats not always the situation when rendering.
