thanks for the follow up Jim, that looks more like what im after. Havent had a chance to punch in those settings, but ill try it out when I have a minute and see where it gets me.

Steve, do you have any more info on the deformer method, and formula method you’re describing? I briefly looked at the formula spline, but i have 0 idea how to input the formulae for what im trying to do. I also just now tried your spline deformer tip, but could seem to get that to do anything useful to my helix. I was only getting it to act as a spline wrap, basically.

thanks for the quick reply Jim, but i dont think its exactly what Im after (though Ill replicate your settings and see if I can tweak them a bit). This is still pretty linear. I was getting a similar result by quickly dropping a Taper under the helix and using that to expand one end. At least that way I was able to use the curvature option to make the shape less linear or conical.

Incase I wasnt clear enough in the first post, i guess to word it differently, each rotation needs to be further than its previous rotation…? so if rotation 1 rose 1 unit, rotation 2 would rise 2 units, rotation 3 would rise 4, then 8, 16, etc, or something to that effect (im no mathamagitian).

thanks for trying greg. ya, viceland may have limited it to north america only? i dunno. all i know is i can see it. unfortunately all the videos of the show, with the intro sequence, are all posted by viceland, so i dont think sharing any other episode link would do any good.

ah, i see cow has posted this as an embedded video. my original link linked to the specific time the effect happened.

so, to clarify, its the title sequence… 0:39 to 0:56… right at the beginning. the effect is obvious.

iv noticed exatctly when its happening. i set a key on the curves layer, move ahead 1 or 2 frames, curves magically converts to pencil mode. step back 2 frames (not undo, just scrub), and its back to bezier mode.

further playing around showed me that if im between 2 keys, its in pencil mode. if im on a key, its in bezier mode. when i pass the last key, it stays in bezier mode. so the solution i guess is to copy/paste a key to where i want to make the new key, and adjust.

perhaps this is normal ae behaviour? i dont recall this happening before, but maybe it was.

yes, both, but i dont consider either to be out of the ordinary for an artist using AE. if you’re suggesting it might be the tablet, i can try unpluggin that when the problem comes up again… but i dont see how that could be the cause.

i found the new version to be way too buggy, so no, im not switching yet. but, unless someone else has any idea why this could be happening, i guess ill live with it for now.
