What kind of tape are you delivering on, BTW?
Quite a discussion. From a technical standpoint that guy sounds like a troublemaker and doesn’t quite understand things. The only complaint they could be making is that YES 25p will look “jerkier” than 50i… or in other words, look more like shitty video camera vs film.
There’s no way to make progressive look like that. You could force the fields out of order so every frame is “jaggy” but that would look TERRIBLE played back in real time.
I have a suspicion that when you field-by-field in Avid, it’s duplicating the field being currently viewed so that you see a whole image, vs seeing only the 1 field and black filling half the screen. So yes, it would appear as if things only change every other frame.

ALP’s are fairly decent budget monitors. The point of a reference monitor is not to color the sound, but let you hear a precise recreation of the mix.
Like a TV in the store – cranked to ridiculous contrast and color to make it seem zippy and wow inspiring – a properly calibrated picture can seem dull at first glance, but you soon appreciate how much better it looks. Same with audio.
The KRK’s Walter mentions are also good. a little more bass lively, but not mind blowing

I was a little taken aback by it at first, but I really think it’s a super useful feature. Would be nice to have an option to change this feature, though.

you can totally put anamorphic footage on a digibeta. it’s a no brainer. but you need to start with footage that can be made anamorphic

I’m trying to find out where your gamma problems are happening. That’s why I’m suggesting these things.
how are you creating your mpeg-2 streams or h.264 streams?
When you’ve burned this DVD, where are you watching it? Are you watching it on the same television that you’re editing on? Are you watching it on the computer monitor? Are you comparing the mpeg-2 stream on the computer monitor to the burned dvd?
You should not be having gamma shifts. We just need to find the one small step where things are going blooey.

You’re using Encore to create you DVD’s, correct?
What codec are you editing in?
Have you tried using iDVD as a test to see if you have gamma shift with that?
Are you watching these finished DVD’s on a calibrated monitor that’s in line with your broadcast monitor?
