Exactly Devin. It’s a “realistic” resolution – not the exact amount of pixels/lines.
BetaSp is 340 lines of realistic resolution. Even if your gear puts out 525 lines of data.

Also if I’m not mistaken, BetaSp only has 340 lines of vertical resolution where Digi is full 486

Sounds like Decklink software wasn’t properly letting go of RAM over time and bogged things down

Yeah it’s a budget thing. We’ve got a massive Xsan and some RAID3 G-Speeds in studio… but this project is a little indie.
It’s too bad, we’ve had GTech in the studio for 3 years with stellar performance. They must be trying to save some scheckles and are buying from different suppliers. It happened with Lacie too: years of solid performance, then several critical failures so we gave up.
Just goes to show – in the age of massive amounts of data, it’s uber critical to have safety systems in place.

Hmm… maybe too much power going to drive so chipset had to throttle it back? overheating over time?
they’re a local company so we’re taking the drives to them for examination.

Export your final 720 cut as a QT. Bring that back in. make sure it’s set to “none” fields. Put that in an SD timeline. Make sure sequence settings have “none” for field dominance. should do a decent downconvert at this point.

It’s tough with DV because you’ll need to 1) chop off some picture to get a widescreen video and 2) blow it up so there’s no letterbox and 3) squeeze it on the X axis to make it anamorphic.
It won’t look as good as the HDV, but there’s really not a whole lot you can do. Keep FCP in “best” render, work in “none” fields with all your clips set to “none” fields and it will blow up OK.

Thanks for the info on Firmtek. We’ll definitely look into them. Enterprise drives are certainly much better.
I hate to knock G-Tech. We’ve got a couple of their G-Speeds which are workhorses… and until recently we’ve had ZERO problems with their firewire… but then again, those never spent 4 months in the chilean bush.
Nevertheless, we made multiple backups so no data is really lost

I would also look into re-installing the drivers for said video card. I’ve had ETT problems that seemed related to mildly corrupt deck control preferences

Just to defened Eizo 🙂
When we bought our new Flame it came with the Eizo ColorEdge240W as the working monitor. We were very impressed with it’s color accuracy and black performance… it’s dangerously close to the BVM monitor, and it blew away a LCD JVC reference monitor and a Sony Luma monitor.
Since then we’ve bought several Eizo for HD editing stations and effects stations. I have zero qualms about doing color work in my bay, shipping my shots to Flame for final output, and worrying about how the color holds up on the BVM.
