One thing to do before troubleshooting… maybe take that last full render, export as a self-contained Quicktime, and bring that back in. Otherwise it’s rendering your titles, plus whatever CC and stuff you have in the nest. In my experience – nesting can really foul things up. Plus this will give you a quicktime backup in case things do go bad.

Now try delete all your FCP prefs. Relaunch and see if that fixed the problem.

  • Won’t get any arguments here. It’s been a bear ever since inception. Old coding in there that just doesn’t hack it when things get large.

  • The Cohen Brothers and Murch probably get their dailies on HDCAM with sound pre-synced on tape by the lab. So all your problems don’t really exist for them.

On our last film that we had to sync from DATs, we simply did a speed ramp in FCP on our audio tracks (99.99%) after lining up the sticks. Don’t know if FCP’s slowdown sounds “as good as” ProTools, but sounded just fine to us, and went all the way through a theatrical mix without any complaints from our mix house.

What problems with keycode? I can’t speak from experience as we’ve never used Conform in Cinema Tools when keycode was a factor.

DVCAM is 4:3 only so you’ll need to make a letterbox screening copy.

There is a slight chance the projectionist can take an anamorphic DVCAM (but if they’re asking for DVCAM in the first place, I’d bet against it). But might as well ask.

FWIW, if I put up a 100% white solid, our Panny 10UK 37″ definitely looks grey compared to Cinema Display, but fairly close to my Sony CRT.

I think it’s the nature of LCD technology to have very bright whites. It’s not that your Panny is grey, but with a bright LCD to reference it against, it looks dimmer.

The panny looks gorgeous with regular footage – but pure white isn’t it’s strength.

Make sure you’re creating 24fps files, and also make sure you’re creating Anamorphic Mpeg-2 (so things look squished). This should give you the best bang for an LCD

Tough situation… Sean’s idea might be the best. Even a poorly calibrated CRT can be alright for a client viewing… but the preset modes that I’ve seen on many LCD’s are beyond terrible. Uber crushed blacks, blooming whites, saturation pushed, edge enhancement cranked, 9500K white point….

What kind of Mac are you on? Those are high numbers, but if you’re on a G4 that’s about right

Ah. Black bar = There’s a sync issue. The deck should have 1) been synced with the same BB generator as your Decklink or 2) been in “input video” sync mode when you laid off.

very odd. Are you using the confidence heads to monitor the Digibeta?
