  • ProRes output to DVCAM for screening: frame size?

    Hi

I’m planning on making a DVCAM screening tape from an HD sequence (ProRes HQ, 1080p, 23.98). This is the first time I’ve done this from HD, so I need to get things straight in my head.

My sequence was shot 16:9, and is further masked to 2.35:1.

So far I think the process will be this: change my “New Sequence” preset to DV NTSC 48k (I assume the default is 29.97), drag my HD sequence into a new sequence to nest it. Render and print.

However: by default the NTSC sequence is 4:3 (right?), and that would be fine for TV, but this will be a cinema screening. So I want to remain 16:9. What frame size do I set for the new sequence to attain this? I’m sure it’s stupid-simple math, but I want to check with the experts before I start tomfooling around with it.

    Thanks!

    Matt

DVCAM is 4:3 only so you’ll need to make a letterbox screening copy.

There is a slight chance the projectionist can take an anamorphic DVCAM (but if they’re asking for DVCAM in the first place, I’d bet against it). But might as well ask.

Thank you! That makes it simple.

Also, i’d make your frame rate 23.98 and FCP will add pulldown upon output. If you let FCP render the pulldown it will look funky.
