  • Edit to Tape Problems, using SRW-5500

    Hello All,

I am making an HD-CAM SR tape, using the Sony SRW-5500. I have made over 20 tapes within the past few months but never with this problem. I am sending 10 tracks of audio and 2 tracks of silence. (5.1 mix and PM’s and M&E). I am not sending video this time, I’m merely performing an insert of just the audio for the movie, which I’ve done time and time again.

The problem is VERY STRANGE. I have my 5.1 mix occupying my 1st 6 tracks, tracks 7-8 are of blank silence, then tracks 9-12 contain LTPM RTPM LTM&E RTM&E. At 1st, when I simply played my sequence while correctly connected to my deck, the deck was reading ALL Channels of audio. When I engaged into Edit to Tape mode, setup my settings that I normally have, an tried to insert the audio on several test operations, It failed. No Audio was being sent. I then did it over and over, trashed preferences, reset settings, etc. I performed the same test, it was a failure. I went about comparing other sequences to that of my current and the ONLY difference was that most other sequences had more than 1 track of video on my sequence. I know it sounds completely irrelevant, but I added a blank track of video to my current sequence and IT WORKED! I had no reasonable explanation for this.

I then was about to make the tape when I was told the Production company did not want the audio in the above order i specified. They wanted PM’S + M&E’s on top, silence, then 5.1 at bottom. I rearranged audio and performed a test to the deck, needless to say, IT DID NOT WORK. The only difference in my settings now resided in my audio arrangement on my timeline which SHOULDN’T be the cause of not receiving ANY audio to deck.

I then restarted, etc, etc. Sent out audio from another movie I did, the other movie works! I copy the EXACT SAME SETTINGS with different audio arrangement, DOES NOT WORK.
I then decide to just record the 5.1 mix on top just to get SOMETHING on the tape, The 1st Reel i inserted onto tape worked with no problem. The 2nd Reel which was a CARBON COPY of settings except with different audio for that reel, did not work.

This morning, I did another test of sending the other movie which worked every time, I sent that out, now its NOT getting the audio through. My problem MUST be something simple and overlooked, but I can’t identify what it is.

Im running the latest version of Final Cut, 6.0.2
    Mac OS X 10.4.11
    2 x 3 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    4 GB 667 mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM
and working off of a CIPRICO RAID which has over a 400 MB/s read and write speed.

Tyler what hardware interface are you using?

    Black-Magic or Aja?

I have had odd issues from time to time and when
I do, I found that powering down the mac and
the hardware interface (in my case a multibridge extreme)
then powering everything back up again solves my
once in awhile edit to tape oddities.

I would also look into re-installing the drivers for said video card. I’ve had ETT problems that seemed related to mildly corrupt deck control preferences

    Chris,

I’m using an AJA Kona 3 interface. I’ve tried powering my mac down and unplugging wires from computer to the Kona.

What I have tried just recently which is VERY VERY ODD, is that in my Sequence Settings, I went and changed my depth and rate from 24 bit to 16 and from 48khz to 32. Rendered my audio in the sequence. Performed the Edit to Tape, it worked. I then went and changed those 2 settings back to my original, performed edit to tape and now it works. Is this a Final Cut issue or could it be an AJA Kona issue?

did you leave your audio 32khz to tape?
that could be a bad thing.

16 or 24bit shouldn’t matter. but SR stuff is usually 24bit.

I would contact aja support and post this in the aja forum.
