Have you ever used FCP for batch capture before? Specifically online?

The biggest step is getting a video timeline to batch capture that has all the unneeded media removed. Media Manager can do this for you (but you first need to remove all speed effects). Even at that sometimes Media Manager screws up and will want to digitze 4 mins for a 3 second clip.

Alternately you can do the classic EDL export and import and batch capture that with handles. You’ll have to copy paste any effects, but EDL is always solid and reliable in a time crunch.

I’d suggest practicing with a DVCAM of the project to see what pitfalls there are – no better way to learn how to swim but get in the water. FCP is a good online backbone – but it’s got quirks that AVID took care of in the background.

FWIW – the AES outputs are coming off BNC and not XLR. don’t know if that is an issue?

Does anyone know when Compressor added this? Last time I bothered checking it just had the De-interlace options….

either way I expect all the SD footage to be old surf films – shot on 16. so hopefully reverse telecine works!

    Ah! Thanks Shane.

How do you have Compressor handling 3:2? I’d imagine turning on the Frame Controls and setting de-interlace to Reverse Telecine.

update: color me impressed. Compressor handles 3:2 well. Even when 3:2 changes from cut to cut. this is beyond useful!

I second Bob. We’ve got a Cinetal and it looks incredibly good. I prefer it hands down to a HD CRT for 24fps work – no field flicker and the colors/contrast are outstanding.

    gaaarrrr!

I just switched jobs from a FCP/kona botieuq to an Inferno facility. I miss you AJA….I miss awesome driver updates!

Good luck boys and girls! I’m still trying to convince them that FCP can I/O faster and better than an Inferno at 1/10 the cost

It depends on which codecs you’re working with.

If you’re editing in 10bit 4:2:2, that’s a YUV codec. In fact most normal editing codecs are YUV. The biggest normal exception would be HD 4:4:4 RGB. So if you render to it with AE, AE prepares the comp in RGB but then converts it to YUV to render to the codec.

FCP will automatically adjust whatever you put in the timeline to the native mode: so Animation codec (RGB) into a 10 bit 4:2:2 timeline will be rendered automatically to the YUV space. In my experience, it does a perfectly good job – there’s no noticeable shift in color.]

You might see gamma shifts though. There’s been a long outstanding problem with FCP and incorrect gamma interpretation. But that’s a whole new thread if you come across it.

    Thanks Chris.

4GB is still a pretty low amount. Are PC users stuck to that limit or do they have some other fancy format?

Get a tablet. You’ll work faster, more intuitively, and your wrist will thank you for it.

It’ll take a week to get used to and you’ll think you wasted your money but stick with it. I cannot fathom ever using a mouse again. For anything!
