[Jeremy Garchow] “That will get clipped too due to YUV to RGB.”

ah, that’s right. All those effects programs will clip because of YUV to RGB conversion!

Capture the HDCAM-SR as 10bit-RGB versus 10bit? then no YUV to RGB problems.

super white and super black both get clipped on export from FCP. personally never found a way around it. I’ve had to export a lot of P2 for effects work and needed to do a color correction to help pull the super whites under 100 so I didn’t lose information on export.

Can’t you open the quicktime file you captured in FCP directly into After Effects (or whatever). That might retain the blacks. Though I have a feeling After Effects will automatically clip the Quicktime coming in.

  • Chapter 12 of the FCP user manual. Should be everything you need.

Open FCP project. Import telecine Log. Capture Footage. Reverse telecine footage and resync database. Edit. Cinema Tools can make cut lists at any time at this point.

Unfortunately it’s not as easy as AVID. Cinema Tools should have been fully integrated into Final Cut, but it’s kind of dangling off the side.

I’ve seen more and more of this happening in commercial post. And it’s happening with BIG clients and BIG facilities. Clients are trying to save $$ everywhere and think they can stiff the senior artists by getting juniors to amend projects. I’ve even seen Inferno archives handed over. (also have seen a handful of discreetly sabotaged project files from disgruntled artists. juniors are too green to figure it out and make a mess of things)

Is the client worth keeping, have they paid you yet, are they happy with your progress? It’s a tough line to toe because work is precious right now and you don’t want to burn a bridge, but your skills and experience make you valuable.

David and John offer the best advice for sure

  • Best to ask the post house doing the work this question.

Chances are they want a ProRes quicktime. Just Export -> quicktime movie -> current settings. That will make a clone of your trailer in the flavor of ProRes you are cutting in.

Those can be AWFULLY noisy cameras. Especially in dark environments where, like David says, the Gain was turned on.

I just recently discovered NEAT VIDEO (thanks to the Cow). It’s a great little plugin for helping calm noisy P2 footage. You can download a free demo and see it it’ll help

Sometimes you can fudge a frame and it slides under the rader, but this is partly a rock show – when the drummer is off 1 frame, it sticks out. to boot the offline was done at 23.98 so there’s no good excuse for not having a perfectly synced online.

it ended up only take 1.5 hours to roll the clips by hand. perhaps I could have changed the capture offset in Kona…. but I don’t like messing with the ballistics once they’ve been calibrated.

[walter biscardi] “The beta program used to be a lot larger and then they cut most everyone after FCP 4 I believe. Real shame because those who want to be first generally end up falling in the traps so the rest of us can avoid them.”

It is a bit of a shame. Many programs I use outside Final Cut (like Nuke or Autodesk products) have a very active beta community and conversation with their user base. You know what they’re planning and they keep you abreast of issues.

I can see why the secrecy is so important to their business model in regards to hardware. But I would think a niche product like Final Cut could be a little more user driven…. it’s not like there’s a ton of competition for video editing software. Avid is dying a slow death, Premier is marginal, and everything else is specialty software.

But alas, the product is good. I stand by it despite the pain it causes sometimes 🙂

I have a friend who’s an aerospace engineer for Northrop (what he does he can’t tell us. it’s all cloak and dagger classified work). He has college buddies who work for Apple: apparently it’s not fun. Grueling slave-like hours, deadlines that you really die if you don’t meet, 1984 levels of surveillance and secrecy, and everyone is paranoid of everyone else… if you leak info to the wrong level of security clearance you are in hot water.

but at least FCP has a nice delicate color scheme 🙂
