  • QT refs from DPX files won’t play

Posted by Tom Von doom on June 24, 2009 at 5:02 pm

I’ve digitized footage from HDCAM SR to DPX files. When I bring the QT refs into the project and try to play them, I get the spinning beach ball. Files play fine in Quicktime. I have a Kona 3 card, a 4TB fibrechannel array, a 2 x 3gHz dual core Intel Xeon with 12 gigs of running FCP 6.0.3 in OS 10.4.11. I’ve trashed prefs, installed the latest AJA drivers, changed the expansion slot link width. Any ideas?

Using the AJA QT wrapper? Or GlueTools?

Might be time to upgrade to Leopard actually.

Do I have to use the DPXtoQT Translator? The AJA VTR exchange creates QT refs. In the AJA documentation, it says you can work with the QT refs, but I suppose they wouldn’t have the QT translor utility if it wasn’t necessary. I don’t have Gluetools.

never used the VTR exchange – the DPX to QT translator works though

I used the QT Translator. Same problem. Beach ball of death when I try to play the file. Very annoying. The files are big, but the drives are fast enough. Does this stuff usually work for you? Maybe I’m missing something. Thanks for trying to help.

OK, I figured it out. There was a mismatch on the Kona output. I adjusted it, and now, it works! Thanks for helping me think it through. I love this site!

[Tom Von Doom] “Do I have to use the DPXtoQT Translator? “

    Yes you do.

it takes about 10-15 secs per DPX folder.

“The AJA VTR exchange creates QT refs”
and if you move the original file location the QT Ref files can generate errors, use the translator to always create new ones.

what are you playing the files from? This sounds like the drives are not fast enough.
