Super Black
I am trying to make some new HD color bars for my facility with our logo in one corner of them. I have the bars from a generator that I captured a few seconds of. When I look at them on scopes, everything is fine, including my super blacks being below 0. This is exactly how I want it, however when I export any sort of file, these blacks are clipped at 0.
Is there any way to make a file that does not clip my black levels? I have tried making a still, different codec quicktimes and nothing seems to keep the clipping from happening. Even making a freeze frame in FCP will clip my black levels.
Any advice would be great.

What are your timeline settings?
What settings/format are you trying to export to?There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

I digitized the bars at 10-bit uncompressed HD. I tried to export a still JPEG, Tiff, Quicktime Still…nothing has worked. Today I tried to export an Uncompressed HD quicktime, Avid 1:1x quicktime and both of them clipped the blacks at 0.

Do you have RGB rendering turned on? It seems like you do.

Open your sequence settings (select timeline and hit command-zero), fidn the video processing tab. What does it say?
I Had another thought, you are exporting out of a timeline and not the viewer, correct?

Yeah I have played with these settings, I have tried all but “Always Render RGB”. And yes, I made a 30 second sequence which I used to export.

By the way, the bars I am using are SMPTE RP 219 digitized from an HDCAM SR tape which when I look at the sequence I have made on scopes (outside scopes, not FCP) are going out correctly. This is only happening on exports.

I am not getting any color shifts when I try this, but I used FCPs bars. I don’t have a generator at the moment. The render settings should be set to YUV or YUV 10bit (whichever codec you captured, it should match). Then put that in a timeline, add the logo, and export a self contained. This shouldn’t shift super black. Don’t change it to RGB.
Where are you putting the logo, not over the pluge I hope 😉

super white and super black both get clipped on export from FCP. personally never found a way around it. I’ve had to export a lot of P2 for effects work and needed to do a color correction to help pull the super whites under 100 so I didn’t lose information on export.
Can’t you open the quicktime file you captured in FCP directly into After Effects (or whatever). That might retain the blacks. Though I have a feeling After Effects will automatically clip the Quicktime coming in.

I haven’t even placed the logo, the first thing is to get the file output correctly. Using the FCP bars doesn’t work because it doesn’t have blacks that go below 0.
