I don’t think the HDW-500 can accept 720p…. I know you need a special board to output a 720p from a 1080 tape. it’s been awhile since I’ve used one.
on another note… the only official broacast standard 720p format is 720p/60. Even though FCP can deal with 24fps media, you can only technically output 60fps media (basically it just dupes frames like crazy… but since the frame rate is so high, it looks fine to the human eye)…. Even though the Varicam records “24p” it’s still striping the tape at 60fps and putting flags in for the real frames so you can digitize and edit at 24.

Are you converting to lettterbox or Anamorphic? I recently worked on a music vid at 720/23.98 and the anamophic to NTSC looked fairly decent. The letterbox looked terrible – aliased and jaggy.

Obviously I’m not saying the cinema display is good for finishing – but for an edit bay in 1080, it’s pretty damn close. I literally have a 22″ Sony BVM (it doesn’t get any better) and the 23″ cinema sitting side by side – they look close enough to the human eye to be “in the ballpark.”

for what it’s worth I was able to tweak an apple cinema display to match a HD-BVM within a gnat’s hair. at least modern LCD’s are capable of getting in the ballpark.

all the HDlink does is convert an SDI signal to DVI. But if you’re feeding that HDlink with a blackmagic card, then yes, the blackmagic card gives you the extended desktop.

QT 7 will let you import a file sequence and then you can export to whatever QT format you want. But going straight from Maya to 10 bit HD would save a step.

I’ll go further to say it’s not so much user igorance… but to do a proper online with FCP you really have to be a creative-workflow-jimmy-rigger and super quick on your technical feet. If i wasn’t such a tehcno-nerd I would never want to online with FCP.
Let’s hope this long dealay means a FCP6 will be a gem.

I’m sure we’ll know soon enough. And i’m willing to bet decently stable drivers will be realeased sooner than later.

Yeah, safe areas are increasingly subject to suspicion. Better transmission standards, better quality televisions…. 9 times out of 10 I wouldn’t sweat titles slipping out of title safe a bit.
