LCD as Critical Color Monitor
With the end of CRT production there has been a LOT of discussion on this forum about using LCD monitors for primary editing and color correction.
Jean-Luc Gason just posted an interesting piece from Martin Euredjian, CEO of eCinema Systems in the Silicon Color forum regarding the limitations of LCD screens. Definitely worth the read for everyone considering an LCD screen.

From what I’ve heard, nobodby makes CRTs anymore.
They’ve all got warehouses of monitors that were made, boxed, and put on a shelf…you can still buy a new CRT monitor…but I’m pretty sure the factories themselves have all moved on to other products.

Meaning that for environmental reasons (phosphors in the monitors), Sony and Panasonic have ceased professional CRT production. All CRT production is supposed to end by 2009 from what I understand due to the phosphors.

It’s been floating around the web for a while. You’ll see that the Sony PVML5/1 series is now out of stock everywhere which is the monitor I use and recommend to everyone. Right now when the time comes to change, I’m hoping the Panasonic LCDs will get even better.

LED backlighting should help things quite a bit after it finally comes out.
These actually have an off state for black and can produce much higher precision color.

for what it’s worth I was able to tweak an apple cinema display to match a HD-BVM within a gnat’s hair. at least modern LCD’s are capable of getting in the ballpark.

Not true. It might appear to you that your apple cinema display is in the ballpark, but as is explained in the article that Walter posted, its not even close.

Plasmas use phosphors also. No end in site for them?
