Any nests? One of our editors was having problems with that “Display Unavail…. Out of Memory” problem when he tried to put a clock wipe over a nest which contained a freeze frame…. The problem went away when the nest went away.

Very good point. MiniDV is notorious for batch conforming problems… if you can afford 5 terrabytes of storage, you might stave off some massive headaches later.

I’ve never used it – but I think in Sountrack Pro there’s some module that will take a noise sample (like room tone with the air conditioner) and try and remove that noise from the audio track.

This is a dark time. Apparently the word “digital” anywhere in the title means Broadcast Quality. It was better in the days of AVR 6 since offline looked terrible – when you got to the online house the client was blown away. Unfortunately 1st gen DV-CAM dailies look too good for offline…

Well… yes and no. Final Cut Studio comes with Sountrack Pro, which has a compression feature.
It works great… but it’s a seperate program from FCP. So you have to learn 1) it’s interface and 2) you have to export and import files.
We feel your pain. Our 10 year old Media Composers have it… why doesn’t FCP?

This used to be a HUGE problem on the Mac…. something with QT assuming you didn’t know what you were doing, so it would adjust the gamma for you. But it’s since gone away. Hopefully someone here with PC knowledge can point you in th right direction.
I assume you don’t have the problem with sequence files?

put your HD in compressor, select any mpeg-2 setting that you fancy, go into the preview window and pull the crop tools edges from the sides in. that’ll crop off the sides when it processes the SD. i’m too busy to do the math, but some quick calculations should give you the exact amount of pixels to crop to turn 1280 or 1920 pixels into 720 for SD.

Why not in FCP?
just make a custom mpeg-2 setting in compressor with a 4:3 crop, also make sure to account for D1 pixels.

That’s a good suggestion… We’re scrubbing 1080 and 10-bit Uncompressed with no problems on a similar XSAN setup.
