[John Kane] “but seems to finish fast.”

For slowing them down, use the Ease In keyframe. Rightclick on the ending keyframe and select Ease In

[John Kane] “And how can I be sure my close-up and full photo are going to fit the TV screen exactly? “

The best way to do this would be to preview your view on a real TV. You can either do this by using a firewire passthrough or by purchasing a dedicated card. If none of these is an option, I would reccomend using the guides from the action safe area. But, remember that no two TVs are the same. What you might see on one TV might be considerably different than another one.

If you lock the tracks that you do not want to cut, you can press Ctrl + K and it will only razor the unlocked tracks.

[Andrew Yoole] “I could actually just get replacement discs for the software in the event of a fire/theft etc at some significantly lower fee? Will software manufacturers honour my licenses? “

I don’t know for every manufacturer, but I once lost my After Effects disc and I paid about $50 to Adobe for replacing the disc(for a 1000 dollar software). Just make sure that you have the proper proof of purchase and that your software is registered.

[Steven L. Gotz] “Are these the current versions of each software?”

No. Procoder is upto version 2.0. Don’t know about the others. But, since this article was written right before NAB, there is a good chance that most of these have been updated.

[victorypoint] “Maybe this shootout article might help. “

    I like this statement:

” Overall contrast and resolution were well above average for the encoders tested, and the ProCoder’s low price ($499) undoubtedly contributes to its current popularity.”

Looks like something went wrong in the Capture settings. Are you sure that you selected Capture Audio AND Video? If you did not capture anything else, PPRO should maintain your previously used capture settings. Just double check the capture settings.

[Steven L. Gotz] “Those pictures merely show that you deinterlaced in one and not the other. Check your settings. “

Actually, both are deinterlaced. I found it weird too.

Like I said earlier, you only need Procoder if you plan on doing some heavy duty encoding. But, if you do plan into encoding on a large scale, then it definitely is an excellent tool.
