Frank, I’ve read the other responses to your question and everyone (of course!) has a different solution. I have another suggestion. On my EX1 I have been shooting in the SP mode which is HDV at 25 mbps. I have then run the video via firewire to the Sony M10 deck on to tape. That deck does a pretty decent down convert to DV. Two things though, can the EX3 shoot HDV and can you lay your hands on a Sony HDV deck? From what I hear the in camera down converts are not brilliant.

No client base Craig. Just making films for artistic satisfaction which go to (and are shown at) various ‘non commercial’ festivals around the world. I do sometimes re visit an edit but only fairly soon after completion and then I still have the media on my drives. So I have the luxury of having complete artistic freedom with no one ‘breathing down my neck’!
Thanks for your clarification of the Transfer functions, I do only need to be able to select sections of clips as shot and to import them much as I did with camera original tape. From then on no difference as I still master to tape as well as producing DVD’s.

Craig, what’s the difference between using Clip Browser and Sony Transfer? Clip Browser can’t work on my older Mac G5 but the Transfer Tool seems just fine with making sub clips and only importing what is required. Presumably you are suggesting complete back up of the card files as shot? I could get firewire hard drives to do that as I would only want to preserve the camera originals whilst the production is being edited. Once that’s finished I discard original material anyway.

Actually Dennis it was simpler when it was 16 & 35mm film. You could see and feel the media, actually physically cut it and lay your tracks of pictures and sound. That was editing and it only seems like yesterday when we did it, and we got quality that only today’s HD approaches.

Although not involved with this thread (thank goodness!) I just can’t resist expressing my admiration of the way you chaps have analysed this problem. It’s great to know that such expertise is available to Cow devotees at the click of a mouse.

Wickham, many thanks for your reply and may I compliment you on your political skill. Now you support the XDCAM codec I am entirely happy and will continue to enjoy the quality of the HDx board for a while longer yet. As long as my pre Intel Mac G5 holds up.

Chris, I agree about the supurb downscaling (even better than BitVice) but I still have the HDx board which does it in hardware whereas the new AJA board uses software. I propose keeping that board for version 13 which I can do as my Mac G5 is pre Intel. The Ex support will still work with that set up.
