Ed, this seems to be dangerous, there are many instances of nasty surprises as to the performance of these cheaper cards. If Sony could do their card cheaper I’m sure they would. It’s like trying to save money on tape, it just might be a false economy. I’m going with a Drobo drive to off load the BPAV files pending editing. Probably will also need a cheap portable drive for field off loads if it’s a long shoot away from base.

Paul, I will I’m sure be corrected, but I understood that Media 100 do not support Pro Res. It’s an Apple codec and they haven’t been all that helpful to Media 100.

Thanks Craig and Don. I believe that Toast 9 can only run on the new Intel Macs and currently I’m on the older G5 but will probably be up grading for this very reason. I don’t want to play the Blu-Ray on the computer, just produce the discs as a production with no menus needed. Do these Blu-Ray players play standard DVD’s as well? I heard that not only do they play them but they ‘upscale’ at the same time, true or false?

Don, I currently encode DVD’s in BitVice and only use Compressor to produce the ac3 audio file. Since BitVice cannot yet encode for Blu-Ray which version of Compressor does this and is it any good because I don’t think their SD DVD’s are as good as those encoded with BitVice. I heard that version 9 of Toast burns Blu-Ray but I didn’t think it encodes. Or do we stick with SD DVD’s for the present and play them in an upscaling player for improved quality?

Yes Craig but I never have occasion to visit a ‘facility’. I do often have to project a film to an audience which I do currently from tape or DVD at SD standard. Going direct from the SXS card in the camera would give that extra quality. I realise that the file could be played from a laptop and could also be archived so of course you’re right in principle. You didn’t answer whether you knew if the 2.8 Transfer Tool will go in the older (Pre Intel) Mac G5.

Craig, being able to go back on to a card in the camera is a terrific advantage if you want an easy to access HD master which you can take from an edited timeline because you can play it out as video whereas a stored master file presumably has to be re imported to play out.
Also, do you know if this new version will run on a Pre Intel Mac G5?

Not wishing to do Noah out of a sale but the Vortex Media double DVD workshop on the EX1 is fabulous. Doug Jensen covers it all in easy to understand chapters and I found it invaluable in getting completely comfortable with this camera.

Jason, the menu arrangements for the EX1 are very good. Presumably you have found the audio section. Provided you have set the external switch on the camera to ‘mic’ and to phantom power (using the camera’s power), the menu is self explanatory. You can use the pre set levels and set the external switch to ‘auto’ if you don’t want to be bothered with changing the level. If you are outside you may wish to use the wind filter which is set using the menu.
By far the best way to learn all about settings for this great camera is to view the double DVD workshop produced by Vortex Media where their expert cameraman Doug Jensen takes about three hours to give a comprehensive and easily understood lesson. Look them up on the web, if your camera supplier didn’t give you this DVD he should be ashamed of himself!

Olof, I will wait a bit to see if Wickham does do an up dated card as he now promises because it would save a lot of trouble, I would have to scan it right?
