Ernie, I take your point and of course we are all different and have varying levels of skill. But I didn’t clarify the whole position I was in. I am now shooting in Sony HDV and I don’t think that Final Cut handles the awkward codec of HDV all that well. I propose trying to make the very best of the format by up converting HDV through Convergent Design and edit in HD within Media 100. I hope that eventually I will be able then to master to either HD, HDCAM or DVCAM and choose either 16:9 or 4:3 for each master. I am also wanting to stay with a system I know and love. I am a lot older than you and although the company may well be flaky my system will see me out!

I have gone to great lengths to stick with Media 100 having just installed HD with all the associated kit. I couldn’t bear to depart from the nice familiar Media 100 editing and had in mind all the warnings about the learning curve with Final Cut. Besides Media 100 is better, isn’t it Floh?

No, you won’t be able to get HDV into any version of Media 100, not even the HD version. The only way to do that is to go in via one of the conversion boxes and I am planning to do that with Convergent Design which will convert HDV to HD (but not vice versa). Media 100 may be enabling you to take DV into their HD version via firewire later this year, but certainly not HDV in its native form.

Jenny, that sounds about right but be careful of expiry dates on the ‘offer’. I believe a modification is coming for firewire enabling DV to be digitized but I am going the whole way by going in via Convergent Design which seems to provide everything and conversion of HDV to HD if required.

Mark I certainly did not intend to be rude and I am sorry if any offence was caused by my reply.
What I was trying to convey was that pricing is a moving feast in this world of ours and I suggested that your re seller (supplier) was the best person to consult, not necessarily Media 100 themselves and certainly not us, your fellow sufferers.
There have been promotions with regard to upgrading to version 10 HD for current Media 100 users and you should not have to purchase from scratch as if you were a new customer. -
Mark, speak with your supplier as one would in the normal course of business! Negotiation on a public forum does not seem to be the wisest course. There was a good promotion for existing users which I believe has just expired here in the UK but you should still be negotiating even in hard hearted America if that is where you are.

Jim, you don’t think Media 100 HD Versdion 10 is cool? Look at what it does and compare that with the others. We only want to edit our media and create productions, don’t need cool, just good!

June 4, 2005 at 10:47 am in reply to: Floh is a One Man Tech Department: Kudos To Floh!!!I’m buying Media 100 HD (upgrading actually from 7.03) partly because of the fabulous Floh but also because it is really the best system around! It is so versatile, especially with one of the two ‘magic’ boxes (Miranda or Convergent Design) to take in HDV and then edit either in DV or HD. Floh, do you approve of this route for HDV? I don’t have to wait for firewire with the box.

I am afraid I must sound very stupid but why can’t you mix your audio in Media 100 by adjusting the volume (and any EQ required) for each of your tracks on the timeline? It was different with film because we had to take all our tracks plus picture reels into a dubbing studio for mixing but surely it is easier with computers. I blend all my tracks (sometimes up to eight) right here in Media 100, what am I missing?

I too want to show faith and order version 10 but post NAB news seems to be that Media100 editing HDV is not going to be possible at least until the end of this year IF EVER. There might be some bolt on hardware which up coverts to HD but then it would mean mastering to an HD deck, (huge expense?). Floh do you have any further thoughts on this? I really am unwilling to contemplate Premiere Pro or Final Cut even though they claim to have cracked the problems posed by HDV.
