Gentlemen, can you please explain to me why, amongst many others, Floh advises the use of BitVice and Studio Pro to encode and burn DVD’s when you guys seem to stick the stuff into a set top stand alone machine and produce DVD’s out of the hat. It takes many hours to encode through BitVice and the results are wonderful but what about yours? You seem satisfied but these things are very subjective. I have in the past tried a stand alone recorder and, as one of you suggests, it wouldn’t play on any other machine!

John, I am not a killjoy, honest! I am as thrilled as anyone with the way things are going with Media 100. I was merely illustrating why I was so excited with the prospect of support for firewire in and out and referring to an earlier post conveying the same message.

You haven’t been following closely because I too expressed my excitement at the news of firewire. This makes mastering to tape so much easier if all you need is a DV master, I have been spending vast amounts on renting an HDCAM deck for the purpose.

August 17, 2006 at 6:28 pm in reply to: DV Devices for the next Media 100 release and betaDavid C this sounds like an answer to a prayer as far as I am concerned! Although editing in HD I dearly want to master to DVCAM also, both in 16:9 and letterboxed and firewire is the best way into my DV deck which is:
Sony DSR 20P.
Please, please include that deck in your spec. I hope the version 11.5 will still operate on the old card and the existing Mac Dual G5.

August 11, 2006 at 9:05 pm in reply to: accessing Media 100 digitized footage in other programsBen, I had this very query when I couldn’t get access to an HDCAM deck for mastering and I wanted to take my Lacie drive to a production house for transfer to tape and was told by a number of people (including the fabulous Floh) that it had to be done on a Media 100 system. I couldn’t find anyone with both Media 100 AND an HDCAM deck and was resorting to sending the drive abroad until luckily I managed to rent the deck here in London.

August 11, 2006 at 10:57 am in reply to: If you were up-grading from scratch which system would you go for?I found the switch to HD with Media 100 fairly painless and not too expensive. I am shooting in HDV and upgrading via the Convergent Design box. The main problem for me is the SDI in and out with no other option which means mastering to a rented HDCAM deck. I can master to DVCAM but only via composite which is a waste of picture quality. Firewire for DV is hinted at later this year. The drive reqirements for HD are a consideration it is true. I have a total of over 5 TB’s but I make documentaries which necessitates high cutting ratios and I am acqireing in 8bit uncompressed. The Mac G5 seems to handle all this effortlessly and Media 100 is as good as ever and as comfortable to use as it was with version 6!

Floh, thanks a lot, on the ball as always, seems like 11 will be a worthwhile up date. 11.5 will have firewire capability also I believe so I might wait for that.

Bobby and Floh, are we talking at cross purposes here? In upgrading to a version 11 I hope to be keeping the card and hardware that I currently have with my version 10. Are you answering the question about unrendered realtime dissolves etc. thinking that the new card will be in place? Sorry I can’t quote the names and initials of the cards but you will know what I mean.

Bobby, glad you have seen the light – of course it’s the best! Bryce was (I think) one of the front men at Media 100 who had to keep the punters happy when all was chaos and gloom.
Can I ask you whether you are certain that version 11.5 (or even 11) will allow real time viewing of dissolves and opacity when editing in un compressed HD because my re seller in London was not as certain as you appeared to be in one of your recent posts.

Bobby, one thing that really bugs me (10.1.3) is having to render a dissolve before seeing if it is right. This is while working in 8bit uncompressed HD. I know that in ‘vertical render” the mix can be seen by scrolling frame by frame but that’s not the same as running it. Also with video in the opacity track opacity changes cannot be viewed without rendering, again a real pain. Am I right and is there any hope of realtime playing of these FX with HD?
