The easy way to do it is to hook a stand alone DVD recorder yo your deck and set the deck to display time code. Then hit record on the DVD recorder and play on the deck and let it do its thing.

[steveret30] “My IT guy suggested that maybe we have bad power in our studio. Could that be something? “

    I would doubt that.

Perhaps it is, a corruption with some of the core components with quicktime that do not get replaced during an archive and install. At this point with the difficulties you are having I would probably suggest backing up your data and doing an erase and install, that will clean up any junk anywhere.

    Beat of luck.

It sounds to me like ether a corrupt asset file or a corrupt project file, that is causing it.

[IQ Nill] “I’ll be selling my 10.4.9 MBP.
I can’t work out how to clean the HD and reinstall the OS to allow for the new users to have a “clean start””

Boot from the install disk and select erase and install.

[IQ Nill] “Also, will copying the “System.keychain and Login.keychain” transfer my keychains to the new comp?
Will the new one have exactly the same password to access keychains?”

When you start the new computer it will ask if you want to transfer data from a different mac, just follow the instructions and it will copy everything to the new computer.

May 16, 2007 at 4:28 pm in reply to: Software Selection Advice

[Frank J. Lozano] “I often see video work (not done by big companies) and wonder what software was used to make it look so polished and professional. Where can one I get advice on what software to buy so I can be competitive and not buy a bunch of incompatible applications? “

Software is just the tool, the biggest thing that will make any production “look” professional is to do quality professional production. Proper attention to the attention to the visual things like composition, lighting, exposure, focus etc. and to getting good audio during production goes a long way.

You must start with quality to end with quality.

As far as software goes my observation is (and I may be wrong, its just what I have personally seen) that most big post houses use ether Final Cut Studio, or Avid. Really the only place I have seen the Adobe production suite used is in small wedding videographers.

I would personally look into Final Cut Studio 2 that is being released next month. Apple always seems to be a step or two ahead of Adobe, take for example the addition of Color to the package.

It is also possible that they are working right now because they have rested for the past month not being used. If that ticking sound was coming from the drive itself, and not something else in the enclosure then most likely after the drive gets some use it will stop working again.

You cannot add chapter markers during capture. It must be done later.

I looked at the website listed in the previous post and did not see anything about adding chapter markers during capture.

You have a Kernel Panic. Usually it is caused by some bad hard ware. I would sign up for an appointment at the genius bar at your local apple store and see if they can make any sense of the panic log. You can also try what the last person suggested and install a copy of the OS on an external drive and see if the issue persists. If it douse then it is definitely caused by some bad hardware.

One more thing because of the age of your computer if it is a hardware problem it is probably not worth repairing. And since you said that you are working with DVCPRO HD footage you may want to conceder getting a much faster new computer anyway.

May 16, 2007 at 5:39 am in reply to: external hard drive permissions issue

What I would do is use disk utility to create a blank disk image on the drive and select encrypted on it, when it goes to create it, you are prompted to give it a password. The disk image cannot be mounted with out the password (so make sure you uncheck the box that says remember password). Make sure that you give the disk image plenty of space for your video. Just make sure that you unmount the disk image when you are finished.

I do this as a way to keep certain files secure like financial files, a document containing all my user names and passwords for different sites, like the bank, car-payment site, credit card site, etc because of course every place has different requirements for user names and passwords so you can never use the same one on all of them. So now I only have to remember only one password.

    Hope this helps.
