when I select imported mov, unattached audio also moves with it

Hey Noah,

Thanks for the helping hand.

When I try to move video the audio below it that isn’t even selected also moves with it.

These are totally separate files. The video is a converted ppt that’s an mov.

The audio is a narration. I imported them bot separately and now need to slice and dice to sync them up properly.

When I grab the video file, the audio file below it acts liked they are connected and wants to move with it.

Hold the tilde key to keep connected clips where they are while moving the clip in the primary.

What a huge problem when you’re trying to slide audio against video to sync voice to words on a page.

Is there something to click on to stop that?

Can you please post a screen grab?

If the clip is not connected, it must be in the primary? If it’s not in the primary, it’s a connected clip? If the clip is in a secondary, and there’s audio on it, then the audio is embedded to the clip (and perhaps the audio is expanded). Maybe you are viewing in audio lane mode, where the audio is sorted by Role?

Yeah I suggest a screen shot. In FCPX, audio has to be always anchored to something and it cannot be just anchored to time as you would in other track-based NLEs.

Noah, et al,

It’s just nuts if you can’t over-ride the magnetic time line. Here I have a PPT converted to a .mov. I imported the narration done separately and now the two are stuck together.

The video has no audio the audio is not imbedded into the video. Both are entirely separate.

To do the project, I need to slice and dice the video and add still frames, clean up the audio and sync it with the video.

The audio clips all have connection points to the primary (where the video is). See all the short vertical lines? Thus anytime you move the video the audio is going to stay in the same location relative to the video.

I think the simplest way to handle your situation is to move the video out of the primary. Cmd+Opt+Up Arrow. This way both are connected to an empty primary and can be moved independently of each other.
