Sony Vegas Pro 12 doesn’t load video properly

Are they on an external drive? and were they working before?

the files all work in windows media player and they are held on the same hdd. they also work on other pcs. its just SV12 on my pc thats not loading them correctly.

Do you have any codec-paks installed like K-Lite? That could have a negative affect.

Hi Will,
Do you know what codecs your mp4, mov and avi files use (e.g. H264, xvid)? MP4, MOV and AVI are containers for video, audio and other data; it is the data that determines if Vegas can import the files. Try importing other supported file formats like MPEG2 and DV AVI to see if they work.

GPU acceleration could be the culprit for the green screen with MP4s and MOVs, try disabling in Options–>Preferences–>Video (worked for me for some H264 encoded videos). If that doesn’t solve it, conversion may be necessary (e.g. to MJPEG or similar format for editing).

Since K-Lite was introduced into this thread, do NOT install K-lite codec pack on your editing PC. K-Lite codecs are optimized for game playback and have really crappy encode functions. You risk overwriting the otherwise good codecs installed by Vegas.

Your video will play on various viewers like VLC and Wondershare because they use their own codecs – not the installed codecs on your PC.

Yes, I’ve already disabled GPU acceleration, which has sped up the preview window in SV12 a lot! However, how do I determine the codecs of my video files? Is there something I can download to tell me what I need? Also, if I need to install a codec, where would I get it from?

As I said, I’m completely new to this and don’t want to just guess in case something goes wrong!

Yes, get either MediaInfo or GSpot (or both). GSpot will also tell you if the codec is installed and let you debug how it’s being processed.

Then try and get the missing codec from the original creator. So, for example, if you need the DivX codec, get it directly from DivX.com etc.

Hi John,

I’ve installed both of those as suggested.

MediaInfo says I need the AVC codec and takes me to https://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/. I’ve downloaded it and nothing seems to have changed, even after a PC restart. SV12 still shows a green screen for the videos.

GSpot is showing all the details of the video and says that it is H.264/MPEG-4 AVC but the status is “Codec Status Undetermined”. I’ve installed x264vfw and still no change to the videos.

I cant help but feel I’m doing something wrong here…
