Of course, I’ve got egg on my face, so let me first apologize. You are right, the brackets are the problem, but these was added by this forum’s software as part of the HTML info, not me. I simply copied & pasted the link. It previewed fine and is in the automatic e-mail back from this thread. The other mistake is that I jumped to a conclusion, which was wrong. You’ll notice that some of my posts came through twice. This is because I thought they were being bounced (I got the Cow error message) so I modified them and reposted. Didn’t mean to hit any hot buttons and sorry for the confusion (mainly mine).

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

Hey…if nothing else, this extended dialog might draw Apples attention to the impact of these issues on their “clients” and also add some motivation for resolution (if they have time to breathe between, iphone, ipod and leopard.)

If I reboot my Mac I find that I have to do extensive re-rendering. Not all files. There doesn’t appear to be a pattern.

Hope the mighty boffins at Apple are on top of this one.

Although I’m VERY surprised that I don’t see any complaints like this string on LAFCPUG – and nobody there responded to a whining complaint I posted a couple of days ago.

Maybe my upgrade to Octo will solve all problems.

[walter biscardi] “I’ve never heard anyone have an issue with Render files just disappearing.”

That’s just it…they AREN’T DISAPPEARING. They are unlinking to the sequence. At least in my case. When I duplicate the sequence…the duplicate loses the link the renders. The original sequence sees them fine…the duplicate doesn’t. And when I try to relink, it catches some, but not all.

Truely odd behavior. And odd that other people render, quit, and then relaunch and immediately the link is gone.

Not sure what is up with that.

[David Roth Weiss] “[avidzombie] “One finishes a sequence, renders it, plays it back, edits, closes, reopens and bang—-0 they are all gone. All media drives are still present, all media is still present just no render files.

I have also had instances where everything appears rendered via the solid blue line at the top and is actually not. When you try to play it back it drops frames… and at some point, not sure what, how or why, but the timeline updates and shows orange and green unrendered bars again…”

This sounds like corrupt metadata or corrupt database.

It doesn’t happen here at my place using almost the identical setup (mine is a dual 2.3ghz G5). You should try a reinstall from the ground up if you haven’t already.”

Yeah,it could be corrupt metadata or database… what I am saying here seems to be confirmed by the Apple Tech article posted in this thread. Thanks Oliver & Shane for the info…

I would consider the reinstall route of I wasnt working on a fresh install. When a new version comes out I normally leave that drive alone and go get a new SATA drive and go fresh with OS, APPS, Plugins etc. Good stuff though I appreciate the effort!

And Walter Im with ya I wish we could find some sorta commonality in the issue. Its behavior is just so bizarre that it feels more like a file isnt being written entirely, or there are permission issues… I vaguely remember an earlier version having a similar issue with drives and losing relationships etc. I think it was version 4.

    Oh well…

    have a great week everyone!

[Sean ONeil] “Even if they fix this tomorrow, a year from now clients will think Final Cut is a cheap solution that makes you re-render everything.

Just curious, but why wouldn’t your clients make the connection that it’s user error instead? It would be a much more logical conclusion. Here a facility gets a new system. One that has had incredibly good press over the years. But the new operators seem to be having problems with basic functionality. If I were the client I would think you’re most likely blaming the software for your own shortcoming.

I know it’s FCP’s error, but I’m just pointing out that the client might just as easily come to this conclusion.

I can see where you think rendering is slowish… if you were on a faster Mac things improve big time in that area. I jumped to an 8 core machine and man o man… There is a difference for sure from my dual 2.0 G5 I’ve retired. RT Extreme supported effects are lightening. Haven’t really checked the motion render times, but I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts it’s faster than what a dual G5 would experience.

The rendering issue does have a work around. Backup your project file intead of backing up sequences. It will keep your file smaller in the long haul and doesn’t have the dissappearing render problems.

That’s probably why nobody caught this in the beta. I think a backup on a usb flash drive or a .mac account etc. is the way to keep yourself “safe”.

Jerry, when I work on a commercial, I save it progressively over time (ie start at 9am -build a bunch of stuff…save at 9:30 as a new sequence….Build some more stuff…save at 10:30 as a new sequence, etc}. Are you suggesting that every time I save it should be as a new project?
Now other times…I will build a generic infomercial and save without titles….then the client
wants to add titles and preserve the genreic version as well. You suggest all the different
versions I buld of this infomercial be different projects instead of different sequences?
I guess its feasable but it seems very counter intuitive and a definite kluge fix. As a temp
work around it seems ok but I sure hope that it would get resolved in the coding.

WOW! I go on vacation for a few days and all h*** breaks loose. Geezy Peetes!

Yeah, FCS2 does have its share of bugs. But what software package out there doesn’t? Can anyone here show me a perfect piece of software? Has anyone tried using a PC editing with Premiere or an other NLE software?

Come on, folks… Give it a break. Yes, its annoying and making you rip your hair out. I, too, am seeing all of these issues but you don’t see me whining much about it. All we can do is discuss the issues here and see if we can come up with solutions or work-arounds until Apple fixes them. Giving Apple feedback is the most important thing you can do. If a number of people say they all have the same issue, Apple will fix it promptly.

    Until then… Deal with it.

    Wayne

I think you may be missing the point a little, even if this is all a bit of a storm in a teacup.

The thread is essentially about whether or not people should switch to using FCS2 in a commercial enviroment, especially if certain bugs cause workflow issues. Personally, I have had FCS2 forced on me through the purchase of new systems recently, with a need for new FCP licences – and we have not seen the render bug yet. Others have – certainly it seems to be more than one person, and so I believe this is an important thread for anyone considering the upgrade – even if none of it is conclusive.

I find myself a little weary of the way any thread pointing out any problems or issues in FCP is shot down on this forum. Let’s encourage an open discussion on all topics, whether they be pro or con – or how else can people have any faith that this forum is other than an Apple fansite. Obviously, this comment is not aimed at you, Wayne.
